Elmer E. Klaus Fellowship

Who can apply

  • Student enrolled in a graduate engineering or science curriculum when the research begins.
  • Selection considers the proposed tribology research experience, its relevance and a faculty recommendation.
  • Previous undergraduate Booser or McCoy recipients can be considered only when the research is substantially different; students cannot win multiple Klaus awards.
  • Submit the STLE academic award application by December 1, 2026 for the 2027 program.
  • Provide a recommendation from a faculty advisor or educator and the required application materials.
  • Recipients are selected from their application and supporting documentation. The program may select two recipients for each award.
  • Use the linked STLE online application system and follow its account and supporting-document instructions.
  • The annual schedule lists January 30 award notification and a December 31 research-report deadline. The balance of an award is sent after the required research report is received.

About the scholarship

The Elmer E. Klaus Fellowship from the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers subsidizes research in tribology and lubrication engineering. The current 2027 program lists a $3,000 award per recipient; the committee may select two recipients. It supports graduate research experience and preparation for a career in tribology. Applications are due December 1, 2026, and selection uses the application and supporting documents. Recipients must meet the research-report requirements before the remaining award payment is sent.
