Employer Student Loan Assistance: Check the Benefit Before You Count It

In short

Ask your employer for its written student loan assistance policy before treating a recruitment headline as money available for repayment. Establish whether you qualify, which loans are covered, how payments work and what happens if your employment changes.

An IRS model educational assistance plan revised April 2026 includes qualified education-loan payments. However, an older IRS FAQ still describes an expiration date. This guide therefore does not quote a current tax exclusion or offer personalized tax advice.

Identify the benefit you actually have

Request the plan document or employee instructions. Separate payments toward existing loans from tuition reimbursement and from other retirement or compensation benefits. Similar marketing language can describe different arrangements.

Ask when eligibility begins, which employment categories qualify and whether payments require an application each period. Do not assume an annual advertised maximum will be paid automatically or prorated in your favor.

Trace the money

Confirm whether the employer pays you or the loan administrator, which account information is needed and how receipt is confirmed. Use the employer’s verified process rather than sending sensitive records to an unfamiliar benefits email.

Keep three records: the approved benefit, the employer’s payment confirmation and the corresponding loan transaction. If a payment does not appear, those records help identify where the handoff failed.

Check conditions before accepting

Ask whether continued employment, satisfactory status or other plan conditions apply. If the policy mentions repayment after departure, obtain a clear explanation before counting the benefit in your budget. This article does not establish that any particular clawback is enforceable.

Ask payroll how the benefit will be reported and whether it shares a limit with another education benefit. Confirm the current tax treatment with authoritative guidance or qualified advice rather than a coworker’s experience.

Fictional example

An employee sees an annual assistance figure in a job listing. The written policy shows an application process and periodic payments. They budget only approved payments and continue checking their actual loan bill; they do not assume the employer has taken over every required payment.

Next step

Send HR four questions: Am I eligible now? Which loans qualify? How and when is payment made? What tax and departure conditions apply? Keep ordinary payment obligations separate until the administrator confirms how the benefit is applied.
