Choose a writing scholarship by genre, grade, and funding purpose. A portfolio award, a recorded essay competition, and a college-specific tuition scholarship are not the same application. Start with work that genuinely fits the rules rather than forcing one essay into every contest.
The options below include several kinds of writing support. Read the payment and enrollment conditions before counting any award toward college costs.

Choose the right submission, not just the biggest prize
For a portfolio, select pieces that show purposeful choices and explain why they belong together. Scholastic asks for a collection of six works and accompanying statements for its portfolio route. Portfolio requirements.
For Bennington, select one category and follow its strict 1,500-word total limit, including submitted text such as titles and citations. The current page requires teacher or mentor approval and gives an additional college-application step for grade 12 entrants. Bennington submission rules.
For Voice of Democracy, do not send an unrelated creative piece. Its 2026–27 entry must answer the current theme and include the required audio and form through a local participating Post. VFW entry route.
Check AI and originality policies before using assistance
Bennington prohibits AI tools for brainstorming, drafting, revising, or collaboration in its Young Writers Awards. Do not use an AI-generated application or revision for that competition. Bennington originality rules.
For every other program, read its own current policy rather than assuming the same rule applies everywhere. Keep draft history, research notes, and sources so you can explain how the work was created. Do not submit another person’s experience as your own or invent an accomplishment to make a personal essay more dramatic.
A hypothetical revision process might involve checking whether a story’s ending follows from its earlier choices, or whether an essay’s evidence supports its claim. That is a general craft exercise—not permission to use outside help where a contest prohibits it.
Distinguish cash prizes from college-specific scholarships
Bennington’s page describes both cash awards and separate enrollment-dependent scholarships. A Bennington tuition scholarship cannot be assumed portable to another college. Read the exact award and admission terms before using it to compare institutions. Bennington funding distinctions.
Voice of Democracy’s first-place scholarship is paid directly to the recipient’s eligible American university, college, or vocational/technical school. Do not describe it as unrestricted cash paid immediately to every finalist. VFW award description.
For any program, record the amount actually awarded to you, payment recipient, covered period, and renewal terms. Keep applications pending separate from confirmed financial support.
Check rights and access before submitting
Read publication, licensing, anonymity, and simultaneous-submission terms. Scholastic’s 2027 participation terms say entrants retain intellectual-property rights, while also requiring agreement to the program’s terms and guardian consent. Read the complete agreement rather than inferring there are no conditions. 2027 participation terms.
Test the file or link you submit and verify formatting after export. For an audio entry, check the required format and duration in the official form, not a previous winner’s recording.
