Study stage matters as much as the words “women in STEM.” A first-year engineering applicant, a continuing undergraduate and a first-master’s applicant may need different applications. These verified routes include upcoming national windows and a local-deadline award; they are not all open in October 2026.

SWE: choose the right academic-stage application
SWE’s program covers engineering, engineering technology and computer science. Its central application considers applicants for society-selected awards for which they qualify; section-selected scholarships require separate applications through the relevant section. Amounts vary by award and are not represented here by a single invented cap. Use the official overview to choose the correct 2027–28 route, then check its full program and enrollment requirements when the application opens.
A high-school senior should not use the continuing-undergraduate deadline simply because it is earlier. Likewise, a local section application does not automatically enter the headquarters competition.
AAUW: first-degree and full-year conditions matter
The Selected Professions Fellowship requires a bachelor’s-equivalent degree and U.S. citizenship, nationality or permanent residence. Applicants must not already hold a master’s or professional degree. Full-time, in-person enrollment must run from September 2027 through April 30, 2028; online or part-time programs are not eligible. Not every degree colloquially called “STEM” is included, so compare the exact program to the official discipline list. Award value is not verified in this article.
Zonta: do not copy the old age limit or dollar amount
Zonta’s current page links a 2027 application and defines eligibility by study stage and contribution. Its international award is now $5,000; an old 2026 local listing or guideline can display a different amount and age-based rules. Apply through a nearby club or the documented alternative route where no local club exists. Ask for the club’s own deadline, because an international forwarding date is not necessarily the applicant deadline. Read the current provider page rather than recycling a past year’s terms.
Match evidence to the program
Prepare a study-stage record, precise program name, transcript and a list of research or project contributions. Collect only the materials the actual application asks for.
Illustrative example: A student helped validate a sensor prototype. A strong project note identifies the tests she ran, how results were recorded, and which design decisions she contributed to. “Created a revolutionary device” would be misleading if the work belonged to a team or the device has not been evaluated. Credit collaborators and do not claim a publication, patent or outcome that does not exist.
Build a deadline plan
Track opening date, applicant deadline with time zone, recommender deadline if different, and final review date in separate fields. Request references based on the real prompt once available. For Zonta, ask the local club for the submission address and deadline before drafting to an old form.
Next step
Choose your study-stage route, verify your exact program and residency/citizenship fit, then save the official application instructions. General giveaways belong in a separate funding list, not among targeted women-in-STEM awards.
