In short

Veterinary scholarships are often restricted by more than a veterinary career interest. A scholarship for a second-year veterinary medical student may not accept a pre-veterinary undergraduate, and a veterinary technician award may apply to an entirely different accredited credential.

Veterinary scholarships are often restricted by more than a veterinary career interest. A scholarship for a second-year veterinary medical student may not accept a pre-veterinary undergraduate, and a veterinary technician award may apply to an entirely different accredited credential.

Start with the four documented veterinary medical scholarships below. All are administered through the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF), but they have different sponsors or funding sources and different eligibility filters. This is a focused AVMF shortlist, not an exhaustive list of every veterinary scholarship.

Compare the verified veterinary medical awards

The table reflects the official program pages reviewed on October 18, 2026. “Closed” refers to the stated 2026 application window, not a claim that the program is discontinued. Later cycles are not assumed.

The Zoetis program page links to the AVMF application portal. A published date window is not a guarantee that every account can access a form: confirm the live form, deadline time zone and document checklist before submitting. No deadline hour is supplied on the reviewed program page.

Zoetis: check where you study and where you intend to practice

The Zoetis Foundation/AVMF veterinary medical program names three school regions: the United States, Caribbean and Canada. It also requires an intent to practice in the United States. Those are separate conditions. Attending a qualifying Canadian school does not remove the practice-intent requirement.

The page asks for demonstrated academic excellence and leadership experience through university-affiliated organizations or activities outside the university. It says the review committee may consider financial need, which is not the same as publishing a fixed income cutoff or guaranteeing priority for every applicant with need.

The announced 2026 timeline places award notification in mid-December after review. It does not specify automatic renewal, a GPA number or an essay word limit on the public page. Do not import a previous year’s limit or invent a GPA threshold. Open the current form through the official portal and record its exact requirements.

Useful next action: If you are a second- or third-year student, verify the accreditation and region of your school, then write a short factual note explaining your genuine U.S. practice intention. Build an evidence list for leadership—your role, dates, what you did and an observable result—before drafting any form response.

Auxiliary Legacy: citizenship and the qualifying-school list matter

The Auxiliary scholarship page explicitly requires U.S. citizenship. Do not substitute residence, attendance at a U.S. school or an intention to practice there for citizenship.

The award covers eligible U.S. veterinary colleges and a named set of international veterinary colleges: Atlantic Veterinary College in Canada; St. George’s University and Ross University in the Caribbean; and Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, Royal Veterinary College and the University of Glasgow in Europe. The provider also requires AVMA accreditation. It does not describe every overseas veterinary school as eligible.

Applicants must be in the second or third year, in good academic standing, and have a leadership role in a university-affiliated or non-university-affiliated organization. “Legacy” in this award’s name should not be read as a requirement to have a veterinarian parent; the reviewed eligibility list does not impose that condition.

The listed September 2026 application period has ended. Use the criteria to assess possible future fit, but wait for a new announced cycle rather than attempting to submit under an old date.

Embrace: shelter medicine is an eligibility commitment, not a decorative interest

The Embrace Pet Insurance scholarship is aimed at third- and fourth-year veterinary students who intend to work in shelter medicine after graduation. It is not a general award for every student who likes animals or has adopted a pet.

The official page requires an AVMA Council on Education-accredited veterinary medical school and states a U.S. location requirement. If your school or clinical placement crosses borders, ask AVMF how it applies that wording instead of assuming a temporary placement settles eligibility.

For a future application, collect evidence that explains the direction honestly: shelter rotations, relevant volunteer responsibilities, population-health interests, or a particular access-to-care problem you want to work on. These are planning examples, not extra requirements invented by the sponsor. The best evidence connects your actual experience to the stated career intention without promising a career plan you do not hold.

The reviewed cycle closed September 30, 2026. No 2027 application period is confirmed here.

Mildred Sylvester: a New Jersey connection is different from a New Jersey school

The Mildred Sylvester Scholarship accepts an eligible New Jersey connection, such as birth, residence or education. The school requirement is an AVMA-accredited school in the United States, not necessarily a school located in New Jersey.

The published criteria also include SAVMA membership, good standing, academic excellence, university-related involvement and leadership, leadership and participation beyond the university, and financial need. Do not stop checking after identifying a New Jersey connection.

A useful preparation note might read: “My connection is education in New Jersey; the dates and institution are ____. My current veterinary school is ____, and my current year is ____. My SAVMA membership status is ____.” This is an organizational template, not a substitute for the official form or documentary requirements.

The award is described as annual, but that does not establish that the same recipient can renew it. The 2026 application period is closed; check for a newly announced cycle before planning a submission.

Separate veterinary medical scholarships from technician funding

AVMF’s current scholarship overview separates veterinary medical awards from veterinary technician awards. A veterinary technology, veterinary nursing or animal health technology credential should not be treated as interchangeable with a veterinary medical degree.

Use the overview to locate the correct credential category, then verify the detailed school accreditation and year-of-program rules. A student in the third year of a four-year technician program is not automatically eligible for a scholarship requiring the third year of veterinary medical school.

This distinction also protects pre-veterinary students: an intention to enter veterinary school does not satisfy a scholarship requiring current second- or third-year enrollment there. Ask your current university’s financial-aid office about undergraduate funding instead of claiming a professional-school award prematurely.

Handle inconsistent provider notices without guessing

The Merck Animal Health veterinary medical page publishes a November 1–30, 2026 application schedule but also says its application cycle is closed. That combination does not establish a currently open application. It is excluded from the actionable comparison table pending clarification.

If you want to pursue it, ask scholarships@avma.org, the contact supplied on AVMF’s scholarship overview, whether the posted dates apply to the next opening and when the live application will be available. This is more useful than letting a generic directory silently override the sponsor’s own notice.

A practical shortlist example

Suppose you are a third-year student at an eligible Canadian veterinary medical school, intend to practice in the United States, are not a U.S. citizen and have no New Jersey connection. Based only on those hypothetical facts:

  • Zoetis deserves a closer eligibility review because its school regions include Canada and its U.S. practice requirement may fit.
  • Auxiliary is not a fit because its U.S.-citizenship requirement is not met.
  • Mildred Sylvester is not established as a fit because both the U.S.-school condition and New Jersey connection need to be met.
  • Embrace should not be assumed to fit because of the U.S. location condition and specific shelter-medicine career intention.

This is not an award prediction. It shows why filtering one condition at a time saves effort before writing several essays.

Application checklist and common questions

Before applying, record the award’s exact name, school year at application, citizenship or location restrictions, career intention, membership requirements and the current deadline. Then read the live form for required essays, recommendations and financial documentation; the reviewed public pages do not supply a universal AVMF document checklist.

Can I apply for several awards? Different eligibility rules may let you investigate more than one, but this review does not establish stacking, repeat-winner or multiple-award rules. Ask AVMF and your school’s financial-aid office before treating awards as combinable funding.

Are these guaranteed loan reductions? No. The awards are competitive, and an application or a place in the table is not an offer. Confirm how an outside scholarship would affect your own aid package.

What should I do first? If the Zoetis requirements fit, read its current official program page and follow its portal link before the published October closing date. For closed programs, prepare only the evidence you can honestly document and wait for a confirmed next cycle. Do not spend time inventing eligibility around an award name.
