In short

Teachers need different funding at different stages. An aspiring teacher may need degree tuition, while a current teacher may need approved coursework or support for a professional-learning project.

Start by naming the expense. Then check obligations: some education grants can become loans if the conditions are not met. A benefit should not be described as unrestricted free money when its agreement says otherwise.

TEACH: read the conversion-to-loan risk

Federal Student Aid says recipients agree to teach full time in a high-need field at a qualifying low-income school or educational service agency for four academic years within eight years after leaving the relevant program. Failure to meet the agreement can convert the grant into a Direct Unsubsidized Loan with interest from disbursement. TEACH service and loan terms.

That is a significant commitment, not a generic scholarship for anyone who likes teaching. Confirm the participating degree, field, school eligibility and service process with your institution and read the current agreement. This article does not establish your eligibility or interpret your personal contract.

Do not assume a future teaching job qualifies merely because it is in a public school or has a shortage. Use the program’s actual definitions and obtain clarification before accepting support.

Professional learning is not automatically tuition

McCarthey Dressman’s grant supports teachers developing new practices with potential to affect student learning and encourages reflection and sharing. Its application window is recurring; the next cycle’s actual instructions must still be checked. Teacher-development program.

Build a project with a clear learning question, planned activity, realistic budget and way to evaluate it. Do not invent student outcomes before the work occurs or assume every graduate course is an eligible project expense.

A hypothetical applicant could explain how a professional-learning activity addresses an observed instructional challenge. Keep student identities and private family circumstances out of the application unless disclosure is authorized and necessary.

Check old resource pages and discontinued awards

NCTM’s overview identifies coursework and teacher-education funding, but its table still includes 2021 dates. That verifies historical programs, not a current application. Follow the current individual award rules before citing an amount or deadline. NCTM overview.

McCarthey Dressman’s separate Academic Scholarships program is discontinued. Do not confuse it with the continuing Teacher Development Grants just because both appear on the foundation website. Discontinued academic program.

Compare the actual support

For each offer, record eligible costs, payment recipient, academic or project period, renewal, reporting, employer participation and service obligations. Keep pending applications separate from confirmed funds.

Ask your school’s financial-aid office how an outside award or grant affects your individual package. Do not assume support can be stacked or redirected to any expense.

Next step

Choose degree tuition, coursework or a learning project; verify the actual current program; and read every obligation before accepting support.
