Single parent scholarships are not one uniform category. Some require sole-parent household arrangements, some support women who provide for dependents, and others fund mothers regardless of whether “single” appears in the criteria. Start with the rules below rather than assuming every parent qualifies.

Soroptimist: the primary-provider test matters
Soroptimist’s definition of dependents can include children, a spouse or partner, siblings, or parents. An applicant must be accepted into or enrolled in eligible study, live in a member country or territory, and meet the financial-need rules. Prior recipients, people holding or pursuing graduate degrees, and specified Soroptimist members, employees, and their immediate families are excluded. Awards progress through judging levels; do not build a budget around the maximum. Review the complete eligibility and application rules.
Patsy Mink: an advanced degree can fit; a duplicate degree cannot
The foundation requires a progressive credential: a more advanced level than one already completed. A master’s after a bachelor’s can fit, while a second bachelor’s does not. The institution must be accredited, nonprofit, and in the U.S.; full-time enrollment is defined by the institution, and the listed completion-date requirement is April 1, 2027 or later. Check the provider’s family-size income thresholds rather than substituting another program’s definition of low income. Read the foundation’s criteria.
Arkansas: location and custody are screening questions
ASPSF excludes some Arkansas counties served by separate local programs and also serves Bowie County, Texas. Its rules address marital status, at least 50% physical custody, and living arrangements. Other requirements include eligible immigration/residency status, no existing bachelor’s degree, a diploma or GED, a 2.0 GPA, at least three credit hours, and the published income cap. Check the county links before applying. Use the official service-area and eligibility checklist.
Prepare an application without oversharing
Create a private folder containing your enrollment evidence, course schedule, income documents, and any custody or household evidence the provider actually requests. ASPSF specifically lists marital-status proof, income proof, a FAFSA Submission Summary, transcripts, and a class schedule. Do not send sensitive records to a scholarship directory or publish them in an essay. ASPSF document requirements.
For a personal statement, explain the connection between a credential and a concrete family need. A planning outline could be: current work and caregiving responsibilities; the credential sought; the expense preventing attendance; and how funds would remove that obstacle. This is an outline, not a fabricated applicant story. Soroptimist requires applicants’ written sections to reflect their own experiences and words, even when AI assists with organization or grammar. Questions parents commonly ask
Can single fathers apply to every award here? No. Soroptimist and Patsy Mink have women-specific criteria; ASPSF’s published single-parent criteria are not women-only.
Does being a single parent automatically qualify me? No. Geography, household rules, financial need, and enrollment can independently disqualify an applicant.
What should I do next? Pick the closest-fit provider, verify the application cycle in its portal, and request only the documents it lists. Also ask your college about student-parent emergency aid and scholarships; an award need not be labeled “single parent” to be worth investigating.
