This research did not verify a large set of portable, currently open STS-specific tuition scholarships. Rather than invent one, the guide identifies real institutional funding and recognition routes and explains what remains to be confirmed.

| Route | Who it serves | Published support/status | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| MIT HASTS doctoral funding | Admitted students in that specific doctoral program | Tuition, stipend and individual health-insurance support; duration descriptions conflict across pages | Obtain current written offer terms |
| UCL research studentships | Eligible applicants under particular institutional/funder schemes | Amount/eligibility varies; not every scheme includes STS or every nationality | Match the actual STS degree and scheme rules |
| Harvard Undergraduate STS Essay Prize | Harvard undergraduates producing qualifying original work | Academic prize; monetary amount not stated; 2026 winners listed | Ask the program about the next spring competition |
The Harvard prize is not described here as a portable tuition scholarship or a cash award of an invented amount.
MIT: resolve the funding-duration conflict
HASTS’ funding page says admission normally includes five years of support, with a possible dissertation-completion provision. Its program page says six academic years. This guide does not choose one statement as a guaranteed offer. Funding page · Program page.
The funding page describes fellowships and assistantships, with academic progress and employment-eligibility conditions. It still prints 2025–26 financial figures; those should not be silently relabeled as 2026–27 rates.
Ask the program which tuition, stipend, insurance, summer periods, duties and years apply to your actual offer. A doctoral support package is not an award you can take to another institution.
UCL: admission timing is not a funding deadline
UCL’s 2026–27 STS MPhil/PhD page identifies the discipline and rolling admission arrangements, while directing applicants to separate funding information. A course’s willingness to accept an application does not mean a studentship is available at that time. STS degree page · Studentship schemes.
Check nationality, residence, fee status, degree, supervisor and nomination conditions for the actual scheme. Do not infer scholarship eligibility from a program’s international admissions policy.
A third-party directory references an STS Aristotle studentship, but this guide does not list an amount or current opening without a current direct departmental award page.
Research recognition has a different application
Harvard’s prize accepts an appropriate course essay, a thesis chapter rather than a full thesis, and qualifying nontextual projects. It runs in spring and is restricted to Harvard undergraduates. Essay-prize rules.
For an STS project, explain the question, evidence, method and your contribution. A hypothetical study of a technology-policy decision should distinguish documents, interviews and interpretation. Do not invent interviews or overstate what one case establishes.
Protect interviewee information and unpublished research. Ask an adviser what may be shared and identify collaborators accurately.
Build the funding question around the actual degree
Ask each department whether admission includes support, whether a separate scholarship application exists, and which deadlines come first. Record tuition, stipend, fees, insurance, duties, duration, renewal and conditions separately.
Keep assistantships, prizes, travel grants and loans in distinct categories. Pending funding is not confirmed money for enrollment.
Next step
Confirm your STS degree and research fit, request current institutional funding terms, and verify any external scheme against its actual field rules—not a generic STEM label.
