In short

Merit funding must be checked school by school. Vanderbilt's Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship and Emory's Scholar Programs are two official opportunities to investigate. They do not establish that every selective college offers merit awards or that admitted students automatically receive one.

Vanderbilt specifies annual renewal with at least a 3.0 GPA. Emory publishes program-specific continuation conditions and eligibility including international applicants. Verify your own route; do not transfer one school’s rules to the other.

Screen fit before preparing extra work

Read the current provider criteria and identify the actual materials required. Do not assume a separate essay exists—or is unnecessary—without checking the form.

Record the admission deadline, merit deadline and need-based aid steps separately. Emory explicitly separates scholar selection from financial-aid review. Emory

Compare coverage rather than headlines

Full tuition is not automatically the full cost of attendance. Ask about fees, housing, meals, materials and other costs, then identify what the written award actually covers.

For an original hypothetical example, a student with full tuition covered could still have living expenses to resolve. Do not label those expenses paid unless the award or another confirmed resource covers them.

Build an honest application

Choose evidence that answers the actual prompt. Describe your responsibility, decisions and supported results rather than inflating every activity into a leadership title.

If another person must submit material, give them the real instructions and deadline. A complete admission application may not complete every scholarship step.

Keep a non-award budget too

A competitive merit application is not confirmed funding. Compare a budget based on current offers with a separate scenario showing what a possible award would change.

Do not commit to an otherwise unaffordable plan solely because you hope to be selected.

What to do next

Open the official program, verify your applicant category and complete the current route. Recheck dates immediately before submitting and save confirmation.
