A useful scholarship shortlist for women starts with education stage, field of study, and the provider’s exact requirements. Some programs serve graduating high school students, some focus on engineering, and others support women who provide the main financial support for dependents. Being a woman alone does not establish eligibility for every award.
Official sources were checked October 13, 2026. Dates below identify the particular application track or provider’s stated annual window; they should not be generalized to every program an organization offers.
| Program | Best-fit reader | Verified support | Application route/timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| P.E.O. STAR Scholarship | Woman in final year of high school planning postsecondary study in the U.S. or Canada | One-time $2,500 | P.E.O. chapter recommendation required; inspect current procedures |
| SWE society-selected scholarships | Students in qualifying engineering/technology programs | Values vary by award | Collegiate/graduate: December 1, 2026–January 31, 2027; first-year: February 8–March 31, 2027 |
| Soroptimist Live Your Dream Awards | Woman providing primary financial support for herself and dependents, with financial need and eligible undergraduate/training enrollment | Multi-level awards; not every recipient receives the maximum | Provider’s annual application window August 1–November 15 |
| P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship | International woman pursuing graduate study in the U.S. or Canada | Amount not stated in checked overview | Follow eligibility and application calendar; overview lists December 15 cutoff |
High school: nomination can come before application
STAR recognizes leadership, academics, activities, and service, but its chapter recommendation is an essential process distinction. Contact P.E.O. about the appropriate local route; do not assume you can bypass recommendation with a general online scholarship profile.
The August 2026 procedures describe full- or part-time postsecondary education beginning in the fall after graduation. Review the complete linked requirements before asking a chapter to recommend you. A chapter’s support is not a guarantee of selection.
Engineering: use the correct SWE track
SWE separates students entering their first year from students entering later undergraduate years and graduate study. The posted first-year threshold is 3.5/4.0 GPA; the collegiate/graduate threshold is 3.0/4.0. Undergraduate routes require an eligible ABET-accredited program; graduate applicants should inspect SWE’s eligible-major list.
The December and February openings are future dates as of this check—not applications open today. SWE also warns that timelines may change. Confirm the actual program and application track before relying on an announcement or choosing a major solely for an award.
Supporting dependents: examine Live Your Dream carefully
Soroptimist requires primary financial responsibility for oneself and dependents, financial need, and enrollment or acceptance into an eligible undergraduate or vocational/skills program. It excludes applicants pursuing or already holding a graduate degree and includes additional residence and prior-award conditions.
Awards progress through club, region, and international levels. The potential $16,000 total is not a guaranteed individual award; local amounts and payment schedules vary. The provider’s preparation guide says at least one reference must be completed before submission. Plan that dependency early.
Graduate study: inspect the individual fellowship, not a general banner
P.E.O.’s International Peace Scholarship is specifically for international women and is not a universal graduate award. Use its linked eligibility process to verify your nationality, study route, and current cycle before counting support.
AAUW’s funding directory offers several separate graduate and research routes. Its general banner says 2027–28 applications are open, while the individual International Fellowships page displays a September 17, 2026 closing date. Do not assume every AAUW program remains open because the directory banner does. Confirm the specific fellowship’s current terms with AAUW.
Build a shortlist without unnecessary disclosure
Record mandatory eligibility, education stage, provider, official deadline, nomination or reference dependency, and what expenses the award permits. Supply personal or financial information only as required through the official process. Broader local or academic awards may also fit, but label them broader funding—not women-only awards if their rules do not say so.
Your next move is to select the row matching your actual stage and inspect its complete current requirements. A small verified shortlist is more useful than hundreds of loosely related links.
