In short

Single fathers can qualify for some single-parent scholarships, but many frequently promoted parent awards are women-only. This page verifies two regional providers whose rules include fathers; it does not invent a nationwide dads-only list. If you live outside their service areas, use the local search plan below rather than applying to an award you cannot receive.

Verified awards that include single fathers

ASPSF: custody and living arrangements matter

ASPSF requires at least 50% physical custody of a dependent child and addresses marital status and who else lives in the home. Living with a nonpartner relative or roommate may fit, but co-parent/partner arrangements require close attention to the definition. Applicants must not already hold a bachelor’s degree; published criteria include a diploma/GED, 2.0 GPA, at least three credit hours, eligible residency status, and household income no higher than 250% of federal poverty guidelines. Some Arkansas counties use separate local programs. ASPSF eligibility checklist.

SPSFNWA defines eligible single parents through marital circumstances, custody, primary financial responsibility, and noncohabitation with the child’s biological or legal parent. Its criteria include low-to-moderate income, approved study, FAFSA completion where applicable, and 2.0 cumulative GPA. Applicants submit required documents, attend an interview, and reapply each semester. The portal distinguishes new and renewal degree applicants; do not use a current-recipient form if you are new. Outside Arkansas: search for student-parent funding, not just “dads”

A narrow keyword can miss a useful award. Ask your college’s financial-aid office, student-parent program, and local community foundation about funding described as single-parent, adult learner, returning student, dependent-care, or emergency support. These are search categories, not verified awards in this article.

Use this email template:

I’m a single father planning to study my intended credential at my intended school while caring for dependent children. Do you have scholarships or other student-parent support that accept fathers? Please send the official eligibility rules, current cycle, permitted expenses, and application requirements.

You need not include a child’s name, custody paperwork, or medical history in an initial inquiry. Supply sensitive evidence only through a verified application channel when required.

Build a useful application file

Record your actual enrollment plan and course load, because provider amounts may depend on attendance level. Keep a private document checklist for household qualification, income, transcripts, FAFSA records where requested, and class schedule. ASPSF names these document categories explicitly; do not assume another provider requests the same set. ASPSF required documents.

For an essay, describe the real connection between education, work, and caregiving. Illustrative outline: current responsibilities; the credential sought; the specific barrier to attending; and the expense funding could remove. This is not a fictional success story or a requirement to disclose trauma.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply to Soroptimist or Patsy Mink solely because I am a single dad? No. Their listed programs have women-specific criteria; they should not be advertised as father-eligible awards. Soroptimist criteria; Patsy Mink criteria.

Does joint custody count? It can in some programs, but the provider’s precise custody and financial-responsibility tests control.

What is my next step? Check county and household fit first. Outside the verified service areas, send the inquiry above to your college before pursuing unsourced “single dad scholarship” listings.
