In short

Being a mother can be relevant to a scholarship, but not every award promoted to moms requires parenthood. Start with the exact provider rules: your child’s age, who supports the household, the degree you are pursuing and any interruption in your education may change your options.

The three programs below are verified. The Patsy Mink program’s deadline and current acceptance status still need confirmation; do not present this as an all-open list.

Patsy Mink: check the minor-child and degree rules

The 2026–27 provider criteria require a woman age 17 or older, motherhood with minor children, low income, and qualifying full-time study at an accredited nonprofit U.S. institution or program. The program must advance beyond an already completed education level; a second degree at the same level does not meet that rule. The provider also specifies a completion-date requirement and household-size income thresholds.

Your next step is to compare every criterion—not only motherhood—with your enrollment record. Ask the provider about the current application deadline before preparing a submission. A visible application link is not proof that submissions are still being accepted on October 13, 2026.

Live Your Dream: financial responsibility matters

Soroptimist requires financial need, primary support of the applicant and dependents, and qualifying undergraduate or vocational study. A dependent can be someone other than a child. Applicants with or pursuing graduate degrees, previous recipients, and certain people connected to Soroptimist are excluded. Read the full eligibility page.

Do not budget $16,000 simply because that is the potential maximum. Awards proceed through levels and local amounts vary. For the written sections, the provider requires your own experiences and goals in your own words; assistance with grammar is not permission to fabricate a personal story.

The preparation guide says at least one reference must be submitted by the deadline for you to submit the application. Ask a reference early and follow up on completion—not just their willingness to help.

P.E.O.: an education-interruption route

The P.E.O. eligibility page requires at least 24 consecutive months outside student status during adult life and being within 18 consecutive months of program completion, along with its citizenship or permanent-residence, location, education and employment requirements. It excludes applicants who already have a master’s degree or higher.

A local chapter must recommend you. The potential-sponsorship inquiry is not the grant application or a guarantee of recommendation. After recommendation, the provider sends the application with a 30-day completion period. Ask about sponsorship before planning around that timeline.

Childcare while studying or in class can be an eligible education expense; ordinary living expenses and existing debt are not covered by this grant. This difference can decide whether the program solves your actual funding problem.

Prepare a funding explanation that is specific

Use a simple worksheet: expense, amount, due date, and why it enables your study. An original hypothetical example is “childcare during two required laboratory afternoons,” not “money to help with everything.” Pair the expense with your course schedule and career objective.

Do not disclose family details beyond what a provider asks for. Ask your school’s student-parent support or financial-aid office whether it has resources for your particular expense and how an outside award would affect existing aid. Availability must be checked locally.

FAQ

Are these only for single mothers? The listed rules differ. Do not substitute marital status for each provider’s actual conditions.

Can graduate students apply? The programs differ sharply: Soroptimist excludes graduate study, P.E.O. excludes certain advanced-degree applicants, and Patsy Mink’s progression rule must be checked against the current criteria.

Is childcare always covered? No. Compare the permitted expense with the time and purpose of your childcare before applying.
