In short

This guide focuses on U.S. college funding for Asian American and Pacific Islander students—not scholarships to study in every Asian country. Some relevant providers require AAPI identity; others serve the community but accept applicants of all backgrounds. Check the individual rules instead of inferring eligibility from the organization's name.

APIA Scholars: do not assume an identity restriction

The current overview welcomes students from all backgrounds and prioritizes significant financial need. Eligible study is an associate or bachelor’s degree at a U.S.-accredited institution; students already holding a bachelor’s or higher are excluded. Its citizenship rules include specified Pacific jurisdictions, so inspect the exact list. Do not assume that residence abroad alone makes you eligible or ineligible. Current APIA program rules.

The provider’s support FAQ still refers to 2026–27. Use it for background, but reconfirm cycle-specific instructions when the 2027–28 form opens; do not carry an old year’s enrollment dates into a new application. APIA application support.

Foundation 649: an identity-centered video, not an embellished résumé

The verified 2026 application asks for a one-to-five-minute video connecting a personal story with AAPI identity. It welcomes undocumented students and other listed statuses. The provider says message and perspective matter more than polished editing, permits any language, and accepts financial substitutes when a FAFSA SAI is unavailable. Successive payments require annual renewal. These are confirmed past-cycle rules, not an announcement of a 2027 application. Foundation 649 requirements.

For a future cycle, read the new prompt before filming. Obtain permission before including a relative, mentor, or community member, and avoid sharing personal records in a public video.

APCF: donor-specific geography can be decisive

The Scott & Christina Yang award demonstrates why a community fund’s mission is not an ethnicity requirement. The published criteria also require college acceptance and income verification if selected. A student elsewhere should not apply simply because the award appears in an Asian scholarship list. Look through APCF’s official donor programs and screen each location, school stage, and income rule separately. Yang Foundation criteria.

Build a shortlist without flattening identity

Use five screening columns: provider’s identity rule; citizenship/residency; school stage; location; and demonstrated need. Mark an unknown as a question to the provider, not as “probably eligible.” Record renewal requirements separately from the first award amount.

Illustrative screening example: An AAPI community-college transfer student checks Foundation 649’s next announced cycle and APIA’s undergraduate rules. A Los Angeles senior of any background separately checks the regional Yang award. Neither example guarantees eligibility or selection.

If a prompt asks about community, use an experience you actually had and are comfortable discussing. Do not invent migration histories, cultural participation, or hardship to match an imagined selection preference. Broader academic, local, and major-based awards remain worth researching, but they should not be relabeled AAPI-specific.

Your next step

Calendar APIA’s announced opening, ask Foundation 649 whether a new cycle has been published, and investigate regional criteria only where your location fits. Before applying, confirm the current form, needed financial evidence, and how scholarship funds coordinate with your college’s aid package.
