The verified examples below are a starting hub, not a claim that thousands of active awards exist on AspireOpen. Facts were checked October 13, 2026. Closed and future cycles are labeled separately. SWE’s conflicting collegiate/graduate deadlines require provider confirmation before this guide is ready to publish.
Verified routes by field
| Field | Official program | Who should investigate | Award / funding | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering, engineering technology, computing | SWE scholarships | Students meeting SWE’s academic-stage, program and personal eligibility rules | Award-specific; no universal amount | Future 2027–28 openings published; application page lists February 1, 2027 and overview lists February 8, 2027 for the collegiate/graduate deadline; provider confirmation required |
| Occupational therapy / OTA | AOTF Educational Scholarships | Full-time students in qualifying professional OT or OTA programs with at least one year of OT coursework | Provider’s overall range: $150–$5,000; individual awards vary | 2026 closed; next cycle opens January 2027 |
| Communication design, illustration, photography | AIGA Worldstudio DxD | Eligible full-time US college students with demonstrated financial need | Not stated on the inspected eligibility page | 2026–27 application closed May 6, 2026; no 2027–28 deadline verified |
| Eligible research fields at graduate level | NSF GRFP | Prospective applicants to eligible research-based graduate study who meet the current notice | $37,000 stipend plus $16,000 institutional education allowance per funded year; three years of support within five | 2027 competition has field-specific October 2026 deadlines |
Engineering: choose the correct SWE application
SWE separates entering first-year students from collegiate/graduate applicants, and it has a distinct India route. Its current application page lists ABET-program rules for undergraduate routes and GPA thresholds. Check the complete personal and location criteria rather than treating an engineering major as sufficient.
The current SWE application page lists February 1, 2027 for the collegiate/graduate deadline, while its scholarship overview lists February 8, 2027. These official pages conflict; neither date is confirmed as the controlling deadline. Ask SWE to confirm before relying on either, and do not choose the later date without confirmation. Its first-year route lists a February 8 opening and March 31, 2027 deadline. Neither future opening is “open now.”
Occupational therapy: enrollment and coursework matter
AOTF’s educational program uses one application to consider applicants for qualifying scholarships. State, membership, and named-award conditions can narrow eligibility further. This is a funding route for students already in qualifying training, not a general pre-health award.
Next action: Verify the program type and completed coursework with your department, then prepare for the January 2027 opening. The published overall award range is not an offer to every applicant or a renewal promise.
Design: a related major is not always enough
AIGA’s inspected 2026–27 eligibility rules identify specific disciplines and require financial need, a minimum 3.0 GPA, and US citizenship or permanent residency. Work samples and statements have additional rules. The cycle is closed; use it as a provider to monitor, not an active award to submit today.
Next action: Check the next published cycle before building a portfolio for this competition. A broad advertising or marketing degree does not automatically establish eligibility for a communication-design award.
Graduate research: separate a fellowship from a scholarship
NSF’s GRFP page identifies a reference deadline of October 16, 2026 at 8 p.m. Eastern, with application deadlines from October 19 through October 23 by field. Verify your field’s exact date and the current eligibility notice before investing in an application. The education allowance goes to the institution; it is not an extra cash stipend paid to the student.
Do not apply an older graduate-year eligibility rule to this competition. Academic stage, citizenship status, prior study, and research area require separate checks in the official notice.
Build your own major-specific search
Use three sources beyond this hub:
- Your department’s current scholarship page, including admitted-student versus enrolled-student distinctions
- Professional societies for the exact discipline or specialization
- Local or employer-linked programs with both geographic and subject requirements
Record the official program name, current cycle, amount if stated, degree stage, school/program requirements, and last-check date. If a fact is missing, leave it unknown rather than copying an old directory entry.
Hypothetical: A first-year student interested in OT should not count an enrolled-OT scholarship in their immediate funding plan. They can save it for later while researching funding available to their actual current degree stage.
Your next step
Choose your field and stage, verify one official program, and identify the first eligibility requirement that could disqualify you. A small accurate shortlist is more useful than a large list of awards you cannot apply for.
