In short

Your current grade is only the first filter. An award can require you to apply in one school year and use the funding in another. Start by recording your current grade, expected graduation date, next degree, and planned enrollment term.

Verified examples by application stage

Checked October 13, 2026. This is a selective starting list, not a claim that thousands of awards are available or that every listed award fits every student in that grade.

These awards have additional academic, financial, citizenship, institutional, or subject restrictions. A matching grade is not complete eligibility.

Freshmen and sophomores in high school: use broad-entry awards carefully

This verified sample does not establish a grade-exclusive national award for ninth or tenth grade. Do not relabel a junior-only program as a scholarship you can apply for now. Instead, build two lists: opportunities with current rules explicitly admitting your age/grade, and future programs to revisit when your grade changes.

For a future-program record, save the eligibility page rather than last year’s deadline alone. Include a reminder to recheck the program before spending time on an application. Early preparation can mean developing a project, documenting service, or identifying a recommender—not sending an ineligible application.

Seniors: separate admission from scholarship deadlines

For each college and external award, record three dates in separate columns: admission submission, scholarship consideration, and financial aid priority. Do not assume one application automatically covers all three. Ask the college to confirm whether an additional scholarship form is required.

For the Cooke example above, read the actual application requirements, including GPA, financial review, testing, and recommendations. The senior label alone is insufficient.

College students: enrollment status can outweigh class standing

A transfer award is not interchangeable with an award for a student already attending a four-year institution. Likewise, Goldwater defines stage by remaining full-time undergraduate semesters. Use the provider’s definitions if your school calls you a junior because of credits but your planned graduation timeline differs. Goldwater terminology

Graduate students: record degree and program type

Create separate searches for research master’s, professional master’s, MBA, and PhD funding. Save departmental funding policies alongside outside fellowships. This page does not pretend the undergraduate programs above finance every graduate degree.

A shortlist that prevents wasted applications

Suggested columns:

  • Current grade and anticipated graduation date
  • Degree and enrollment term the award will support
  • Required institution, geography, subject, and applicant status
  • Official application link and date checked
  • Deadline and recommender deadline
  • Application now, monitor for later, or ineligible

Illustrative example: a tenth grader can put Coolidge in “monitor for junior year,” not “apply now.” A senior applying to college cannot use junior-only eligibility just because the award funds college.
