In short

“Religion scholarships” can describe three different kinds of funding. An academic religious studies award may recognize research or coursework. A seminary scholarship may support a specific theological degree and assess ministry leadership. A faith-affiliation scholarship may support students in many majors, provided they meet a membership or community requirement.

Before applying, decide which category you need. Studying religion does not automatically establish a religious affiliation, and affiliation does not automatically satisfy a degree requirement. The opportunities below make those differences visible so you can avoid spending time on the wrong application.

Religion funding opportunities to investigate

These are verified provider-listed opportunities, not a list of currently open applications. Where a new award cycle, amount or deadline is not published in the reviewed material, that gap is stated explicitly.

Presbyterian Scholarships for Undergraduates$4,000 up to need; possible additional $2,000 supplement for People of Color if need remainsPC(USA) members pursuing a first associate or bachelor’s degree full-time at an accredited U.S. institutionReviewed page names 2026–27; next-cycle status unresolved

The first four entries concern academic study and student achievement. Wesley concerns institution-specific graduate theological education. The Presbyterian undergraduate program is affiliation-based and is not presented by its provider as a religious-studies-major scholarship. 1. Bob Pettapiece Endowed Scholarship at Michigan State

Michigan State’s religious studies department lists the Bob Pettapiece Endowed Scholarship separately from its recognition awards. Its published preferences are undergraduate students pursuing a religious studies major, students with low-to-moderate financial need, and Detroit, Michigan residents. Graduate students and religious studies minors may also be considered, with preference for majors. (Source: religiousstudies.msu.edu)

That language matters. It would be inaccurate to convert every preference into a mandatory eligibility rule or tell a minor that consideration is impossible. It would be equally inaccurate to promise eligibility to someone outside MSU simply because they study religion elsewhere.

The provider page links to an application but does not state a dollar value, current award year or deadline. An available form link does not establish that a selection cycle is accepting submissions today.

Next action: Start with the MSU student awards and scholarships page. Ask the department for the current cycle, amount, deadline, enrollment rules and whether an applicant submits directly. If you are a minor or graduate student, ask how the published consideration language applies to you before preparing additional materials.

Do not confuse this scholarship with other MSU honors

The same page lists awards for academic achievement, community engagement, religion and ecology, and religion and criminal justice. Some entries describe recognition without stating a cash amount. The Theta Alpha Kappa Undergraduate Achievement Award, for example, is described as a $100 award funded every other year and selected through the local chapter representative. Do not turn every departmental honor into an annually available tuition scholarship. (Source: religiousstudies.msu.edu)

2. Barbara and Donald Donner Essay Award at UC Riverside

UCR lists the Barbara and Donald Donner Essay Award as a $300 spring-quarter competition recognizing undergraduate research and writing in the academic study of religion. It is open to UCR undergraduates who have written a paper illuminating an aspect of religion. (Source: studyofreligion.ucr.edu)

The paper must have been written within an academic program or department at UCR, but it does not have to come from a course offered specifically by religious studies. This distinction can matter for a student studying history, literature or another field whose academic work genuinely addresses religion. (Source: studyofreligion.ucr.edu)

The reviewed page directs students to department faculty for essay specifications. It does not provide a current submission deadline, length limit or assurance that an old course paper meets the next competition’s rules. Its general information also should not be treated as a newly announced 2027 call.

Next action: Ask faculty for the current competition instructions before revising your paper. Confirm the permitted paper length, original-course requirement, submission method, selection process and award cycle. Keep a clean copy of the original assignment and an accurate bibliography so you can document the work’s context.

3. UCR Religious Studies Achievement Award

UCR publishes a $500 Religious Studies Achievement Award for a religious studies student with meritorious achievement. The listed criteria include a religious studies GPA of at least 3.5, progress toward departmental goals, and meritorious work attested to by faculty who have worked with the student. (Source: studyofreligion.ucr.edu)

The department describes those goals in terms of attention to facts, critical and creative reflection, analysis and interpretation, and clear communication. A persuasive academic record should demonstrate those practices rather than rely only on a general statement of enthusiasm. (Source: studyofreligion.ucr.edu)

Next action: Ask whether the current process requires a student application, faculty nomination or both. Verify the selection timetable and how the departmental GPA is calculated. Do not assume your cumulative university GPA and religious studies GPA are the same measure.

For supporting materials, choose evidence that fits the department’s actual request. That might include an analytical paper or a faculty assessment if requested. Do not send extra personal information or a statement of belief simply because the discipline involves religion.

4. Edwin S. Gaustad Award: an academic next-step award

The Edwin S. Gaustad Award is listed at $500 for a UCR religious studies graduating senior or recent graduate interested in graduate studies in religion. Its published criteria include a religious studies GPA of at least 3.5, demonstrated progress in departmental goals, and meritorious work attested to by faculty. (Source: studyofreligion.ucr.edu)

This is not evidence of a funded master’s or doctoral offer. A small academic award can recognize preparation for graduate work without covering graduate tuition or guaranteeing admission.

Next action: Ask what “recent graduate” means for the current selection cycle, whether enrollment elsewhere affects consideration, and which documents demonstrate your graduate-study plans. The reviewed page does not define a current application date or a precise post-graduation eligibility window.

If you are comparing graduate offers, build a separate funding worksheet for tuition remission, stipends, fees, health insurance and appointment obligations. Do not mix a one-time $500 award into a claim that a graduate program is fully funded.

5. Wesley Theological Seminary master’s merit scholarships

Wesley DC offers a limited number of master’s merit scholarships to students of all denominations, assessing prior academic achievement and demonstrated ability and potential for leadership in the church. These awards are made during admissions, rather than described as a portable scholarship for students at any institution. (Source: wesleyseminary.edu)

The published tiers are:

  • Bishop’s: full tuition.
  • Oxnam: 75% tuition.
  • Governor’s: 60% tuition.
  • Next Call: 50% tuition.
  • Presidential: 40% tuition.
  • Wesley Merit: 25% tuition.

The page associates these tiers with coverage limits of up to 81 credits for the MDiv, 60 for the MTS and 36 for the MA. The master’s merit tiers do not apply to the DMin program. (Source: wesleyseminary.edu)

Full tuition is not the same as a full ride

A tuition percentage does not establish coverage for housing, food, books, fees or all costs beyond the credit limit. Ask how your planned course load, transfer credits, part-time attendance and program changes affect the award. Request the actual award letter and current renewal requirements rather than relying only on the general tier table.

The page gives a February 1 admissions deadline in the preceding academic year for merit consideration. Because that wording is not a dated entry-year call, confirm the exact deadline for your intended start term. Do not silently rewrite it as a verified February 1, 2027 deadline for every applicant. (Source: wesleyseminary.edu)

Next action: Contact Wesley admissions and financial aid with your exact degree and start term. Ask whether a separate scholarship submission is required, what academic progress standard applies, what costs the tuition award excludes, and whether outside or denominational aid can be combined.

6. Presbyterian Scholarships for Undergraduates: affiliation-based, not major-based

The PC(USA) undergraduate scholarship page describes aid for church members pursuing a first associate or bachelor’s degree, attending an accredited U.S. college or university full-time in 2026–27. It lists $4,000, up to need, with possible consideration for an additional $2,000 supplement for People of Color if need remains. The provider describes the program as need-based, using the Student Aid Index. (Source: pcusa.org)

This is relevant to eligible church members who study religion, but it is not evidence that a religious studies major is required. Conversely, majoring in religion does not substitute for the church-membership requirement.

Current-cycle caution

The reviewed page says “applications are now open” while naming the 2026–27 academic year and giving the second Monday in May as the applicant deadline and first Monday in June for responders. As of this October 15, 2026 review, those deadline patterns have already passed for the displayed cycle. We could not establish whether the banner is current or whether a new cycle or exception applies. Do not rely on it as an open application recommendation. (Source: pcusa.org)

Next action: Contact the financial aid office listed on the provider page and request the current award-year guidelines, application window, membership verification and responder requirements. Read the updated guidelines before assuming the amount or rules will remain identical for 2027–28.

The same provider page lists the Samuel Robinson Award, up to $2,000 for juniors and seniors attending Presbyterian-related colleges or universities, and describes a Westminster Shorter Catechism memorization process. That is a distinct award with its own terms, not an automatic supplement to the undergraduate scholarship. (Source: pcusa.org)

How to choose the right funding route

Start with your exact degree and institution

Write down your degree title, academic level, institution, enrollment status and intended start date. Religious studies, theology and professional ministry degrees can lead to different funding opportunities. A scholarship associated with one department or seminary should not be assumed to follow you to another school.

Separate academic evidence from affiliation evidence

For an academic award, prepare the requested transcript, research paper or faculty support. For an affiliation-based program, follow the provider’s membership and reference rules. For ministry preparation, address the stated vocational criteria honestly. Do not manufacture a belief, affiliation, service history or endorsement to appear eligible.

Protect privacy in essays and references

Describe your own learning without exposing someone else’s confidential pastoral, counseling or community experience. If you discuss research involving people or communities, avoid identifying private individuals unnecessarily. A specific scholarly example can demonstrate intellectual growth without disclosing sensitive personal details.

Calculate the remaining cost

Put tuition, fees, living costs and books in separate rows. Then label each funding source as a tuition percentage, a fixed award, a need-based amount or a job. Ask the financial aid office how outside funding affects other aid and when funds are disbursed. Do not count a pending award as confirmed income.

Verify the next action before writing

A useful provider email can be short: “I am a degree/year student at institution. Does the current award accept applicants with my enrollment status? What are the amount, deadline, required materials and application route for the next cycle?” Include only information needed to establish fit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to belong to a religion to receive a religious studies award?

Do not infer a belief requirement from an academic department’s name. The MSU and UCR pages reviewed describe academic or financial criteria, while the Presbyterian undergraduate program explicitly requires PC(USA) membership. Check the actual award terms rather than applying one rule to every category. (Sources: religiousstudies.msu.edu, studyofreligion.ucr.edu, pcusa.org)

Can a non-major apply?

Sometimes the provider permits it. UCR’s Donner essay competition is described for UCR undergraduates with a qualifying academic paper, not only religious studies majors. MSU says minors and graduate students may be considered for the Pettapiece scholarship, with preference for majors. Neither example establishes eligibility for students at other institutions. (Sources: studyofreligion.ucr.edu, religiousstudies.msu.edu)

Are seminary scholarships available to doctoral students?

Do not apply a master’s scholarship table to a doctorate. Wesley explicitly says its listed master’s merit tiers do not apply to the DMin. Ask about the specific doctoral program and funding structure. (Source: wesleyseminary.edu)

Which applications are open right now?

This research does not establish a dependable open-now list. The reviewed pages provide useful program details, but current-cycle dates are missing or ambiguous. Contact the provider and verify the live cycle before submitting personal information or spending time on an essay.
