In short

Physical-science funding depends on the stage and purpose of your work. A fellowship for a new doctoral researcher, a specialized stewardship-science program, and an undergraduate research prize are not interchangeable tuition awards.

Start with your degree, expected graduation and research direction. The selected programs below are research-focused; they are not a complete list for every science student.

Hertz: eligibility is about the actual doctoral plan

Hertz includes applied physical, biological and engineering sciences, mathematics and computer science, with U.S. citizenship/permanent-resident conditions. Its FAQ specifies a U.S. research PhD and excludes professional doctorates such as JD, MD and EdD. Awards are competitive; the provider describes broad financial support, not guaranteed funding for everyone. Application/eligibility · FAQ.

A hypothetical applicant should explain the research question, preparation and intended contribution without inventing a supervisor commitment or completed result. If your career plan is not research-based, choose funding that fits rather than rewriting your intention to satisfy an award.

Specialized fellowships need specialized fit

The DOE NNSA page says the 2027–28 application opened October 7, 2026 and includes distinct program requirements and research areas. Its current handbook describes the supported high-energy-density, materials-under-extreme-conditions and nuclear-science focus. A general physical-science major does not establish fit. Program · Current handbook.

Read the full guide for citizenship, academic stage, benefits, practicum and obligations. This article does not substitute a guessed stipend or generic STEM description for those terms.

Ask the program about an interdisciplinary proposal when the connection is uncertain. Label the lead “question for provider” until clarified.

An undergraduate prize is not a graduate stipend

The Apker award recognizes undergraduate physics research and is awarded through nomination. Its institutional grant supports undergraduate research at the recipient’s institution; it is not extra cash for the student. The page lists 2026 recipients but does not establish a new open nomination deadline here. APS award structure.

Ask a faculty adviser about the actual nomination process and current cycle. Do not self-label a class project as a prize-winning research result or assume a faculty recommendation guarantees selection.

Explain evidence and uncertainty clearly

Use a specific question, method, result and limitation. Distinguish your role from the group’s broader output. A hypothetical applicant might explain why a model fit was limited or how an experimental assumption was tested.

Do not invent publications, numerical results or access to a laboratory. Ask permission before sharing unpublished findings, proprietary data or restricted technical material. A credible research statement can acknowledge what remains unknown.

Compare the actual support agreement

Record tuition, stipend, fees, insurance, duration, renewal, funded terms and any duties separately. Ask whether outside awards can be combined and how a change in enrollment affects support. Keep pending fellowships out of confirmed funding.

Next step

Identify research degree and field fit, check the nearest actual deadline, and coordinate references or nomination early. Ask your department about separate institutional physical-science awards.
