The institutional example is not portable funding available at any university. Individual fellowship eligibility requires the provider’s complete rules.
Hertz: application and references have different deadlines
Hertz’s FAQ covers college seniors, first-year graduate students, gap-year applicants, and specific master’s-to-PhD scenarios. It also explains exceptional cases beyond the standard stage. Read the scenario that matches your history rather than assuming “PhD student” is sufficient.
Four recommenders submit the provider’s evaluation form, not ordinary supplemental letters. The reference deadline is November 2, 2026, 6 p.m. Pacific. Funding is limited to full-time study at approved participating U.S. schools, with a process to request a school agreement. Hertz FAQ
Suggested first step: ask potential references whether they can describe your scientific work and creativity, then send the current provider instructions and deadline.
NSF: use this year’s eligibility, not an old summary
The FY2027 solicitation is the governing source. Prior graduate study, approved research field, and current educational stage can affect eligibility. Do not infer that switching universities resets a student’s graduate history. Use the official rules and ask the program about an unresolved case before drafting the full application. Current NSF solicitation
A field deadline and the reference deadline are separate tasks. If one has passed when you read this, do not treat the other as an extension.
University funding: the offer letter governs your package
Rackham describes packages with tuition, stipend, and benefits, typically four to six years depending on the PhD program and admission offer. This is an institutional example, not evidence that all PhDs are fully funded. Rackham framework
When comparing programs, ask what is guaranteed and what depends on teaching, research appointments, advisor funding, academic progress, or a separate application. Ask about summer support and required fees explicitly.
Translate a funding headline into a usable budget
Suggested comparison fields: annual take-home stipend estimate, tuition coverage, required fees, insurance, summer months, guaranteed years, duties, and continuation conditions.
Illustrative example: a $30,000 stipend paid over nine months and a $30,000 stipend paid over twelve months have the same annual total but different cash flow. Neither is necessarily better without knowing summer employment, costs, and obligations. Do not compare only the monthly payment.
Plan for the stage after the initial award
Early-stage fellowships are not dissertation-completion awards. If you are already beyond the eligible entry stage, investigate your graduate school’s current dissertation, travel, emergency, or completion funding instead of applying to an ineligible first-year program. Keep those searches separate from the award list above.
