One provider may require a full year of occupational therapy coursework before you can apply. Another may consider students accepted into graduate study but exclude assistant and undergraduate programs altogether. State-specific funds may add residency, school-location, or professional-association membership requirements.
Start with your actual degree, program stage, and intended expense. Then compare the scholarship’s eligibility and current application instructions. This guide explains verified AOTF and AMBUCS routes without presenting closed calls as open or assuming every healthcare award accepts OT students.
Occupational therapy scholarship routes at a glance
Checked October 17, 2026. AOTF says its next educational scholarship application opens in January 2027. AMBUCS publishes an annual February 1–April 1 window, but the linked application is labeled 2026; a specific new 2027 portal was not verified.
| Route | Published funding | Who should investigate | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| AOTF general and named educational scholarships | Portfolio ranges from $150 to $5,000; individual amounts vary and many displayed records say TBD | Full-time students in eligible professional-level master’s/OTD or OTA programs with at least one completed year of OT coursework | 2026 applications closed; next opening January 2027. Exact new closing date not established here. |
| AOTF state-association scholarship partnerships | Varies by individual scholarship | Students meeting the relevant residence, school, program, and association requirements | One common application does not remove state or award-specific restrictions. |
| AOTF Pi Theta Epsilon-related opportunities | Individual amount must be checked | Eligible OT students meeting specific PTE membership and award criteria | Honor-society membership does not replace common enrollment and coursework rules. |
| National AMBUCS Scholarships for Therapists | Individual awards generally $600–$1,500; one special two-year $6,000 award listed | Students accepted into accredited graduate-level OT or other listed therapy programs | Assistant and undergraduate programs excluded. Current page links 2026 application; verify next cycle. |
These are distinct funding routes, not a guarantee that their amounts can be added together. Ask your school how any outside award affects your financial-aid package.
AOTF educational scholarships: confirm your degree stage first
The American Occupational Therapy Foundation’s educational scholarship page describes one comprehensive application that matches applicants with qualifying general, named, state-specific, and other scholarships.
Its published common eligibility requires:
- Current full-time enrollment in an AOTA-accredited or developing professional-level master’s or OTD program, or an occupational therapy assistant program.
- At least one completed year of occupational therapy coursework.
- Compliance with any additional scholarship-specific or state-specific requirements.
Being admitted to a program is not the same as meeting this enrolled-student and completed-coursework requirement. If you are still taking prerequisites or entering your first professional year, ask the provider how it measures eligibility before preparing an application.
Use your exact credential and program status. A research doctorate, a post-professional degree, an undergraduate pre-OT major, and an entry-level OTD are not interchangeable labels. The educational scholarship overview is not evidence that every form of occupational therapy-related study qualifies.
What does the award range mean?
AOTF’s overview lists scholarships from $150 to $5,000. That is a portfolio range, not a promise that every named scholarship offers $5,000. Its available-scholarship page contains many individual amounts marked “TBD.”
When an amount is not established for the current call, leave it unconfirmed. Do not take an older recipient announcement or another fund’s amount and attach it to the award you want to apply for.
The provider also says endowed scholarships may rotate so funds can grow, while corporate scholarships depend on donor support. An award’s appearance in an older list does not establish that it will be offered in every future cycle.
Which AOTF scholarship category fits you?
General and named OT educational scholarships
AOTF’s displayed list includes awards with broad purposes and others with specific interests. For example, the Mary Will McKenzie Endowed Scholarship describes interest or work in physical disability and enrollment in an accredited U.S. master’s or OTD program. Other funds emphasize public policy, professional leadership, a particular institution, or a research/capstone topic.
These descriptions should guide matching, not encourage you to reshape your experience into something untrue. If a fund prioritizes a field you have not studied or worked in, a different opportunity may be a better fit.
The available page is labeled for 2026. Confirm whether each named fund is offered and whether its conditions have changed in the new competition before treating the displayed criteria as final 2027 rules.
OTA scholarships
AOTF includes assistant-program eligibility in its common educational scholarship scope and provides an associate-degree section in its displayed scholarship list. That section includes the Carlotta Welles Scholarship and other opportunities with their own conditions.
Do not assume every scholarship in the post-baccalaureate section also accepts OTA students. Select your real degree type and check the matching record. Conversely, do not rule yourself out of the entire AOTF program simply because some of its awards are for graduate OT study.
State-association scholarships
The AOTF available-scholarship list illustrates how state conditions vary. The displayed Arizona record combines state residency, enrollment in an Arizona program, and Arizona association membership. The Florida record refers to enrollment in a Florida program and state association membership. Other records emphasize residence, a named institution, or a different membership combination.
Those are examples from the displayed cycle, not a universal rule for every state. Studying in a state does not automatically prove residency, and national professional membership does not automatically satisfy a state-association requirement.
Create a small checklist for each potential match: residence, school location, degree level, completed coursework, membership, and any additional activity or reporting. Verify each item rather than relying on the scholarship’s state name alone.
Pi Theta Epsilon-related funding
AOTF identifies PTE scholarships as a distinct category. The displayed Martha Kirkland PTE Endowed Scholarship includes membership and leadership-related criteria. Do not infer that PTE membership alone makes you eligible or guarantees an award.
If you are unsure whether your membership is active or how to document it, ask the chapter or provider before submitting. Follow the actual fund’s criteria rather than importing the requirements of a different honor society.
Prepare AOTF’s three reference types
The AOTF instructions require three references: an academic reference, a character reference, and the OT program director’s reference. All must be completed by the application deadline; an application without all three is disqualified under the reviewed instructions.
The academic reference should be a current faculty member or faculty adviser who can discuss your academic ability. The character reference should be someone who can speak to your character. The program director has a separate role and receives the provider’s form through the application process.
These are provider-specific reference forms, not an invitation to upload any three generic recommendation letters. Enter correct names and email addresses, tell each person to expect the request, and track whether the forms have been submitted.
Prepare a résumé that accurately identifies volunteer service, extracurricular activities, honors, awards, and employment. The application also asks essay questions and gathers academic background and relevant membership information. Use the new cycle’s actual prompts; do not invent a word limit or assume a previous essay question is unchanged.
A strong response can connect academic preparation, a supervised experience, a learning goal, and a specific contribution to the profession or community. AOTF highlights academic performance, leadership, professional commitment, and community engagement. You do not need to claim that every activity was leadership; explain your actual responsibilities.
AOTF timing and payment questions
The overview says 2026 applications are closed and that the next program opens in January 2027. It uses the label “2026–2027 funding cycle” for that upcoming opening. Follow the new live call for its exact closing date and enrollment-year rules instead of assuming the label tells you the complete schedule.
Do not borrow a deadline from one of AOTF’s separate doctoral research or postdoctoral programs and apply it to educational scholarships. Programs within the same foundation can have different calendars and eligibility.
The reviewed educational pages do not establish a complete use-of-funds policy, payment recipient, disbursement date, or automatic renewal rule. Ask before counting on an award to pay rent, fieldwork travel, licensing examinations, or an equipment purchase. An educational purpose is not evidence that every education-related expense is allowed.
AMBUCS: a separate graduate-therapy scholarship route
The National AMBUCS scholarship program supports students accepted into accredited graduate-level programs in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, or audiology.
Its current national page explicitly excludes assistant and undergraduate programs. This makes it a different route from AOTF’s OTA-inclusive educational scholarships. An OTA student should not assume the word “therapy” overrides the exclusion.
AMBUCS says selection considers financial need, community commitment, compassion and integrity, and career objectives. Chapter-sponsored applications receive priority consideration. Sponsorship does not replace eligibility or eliminate the financial-need requirement.
Amounts and payment
The national page lists individual awards of $600–$1,500 and one special two-year award totaling $6,000. The special award should not be described as a $6,000 annual award available to everyone.
Award money is sent to the financial-aid office and credited to the student’s institutional account. That is different from an immediate unrestricted cash payment. Ask the school how the scholarship is applied and whether it changes other support.
The reviewed material does not establish every permitted expense or a general renewal entitlement. Read the award letter rather than assuming a one-year award becomes multi-year funding.
Required documents and a focused personal statement
AMBUCS lists a FAFSA Submission Summary, proof of enrollment in an eligible accredited program, and a one-page personal statement. It says the FAFSA documentation is required even if you do not want federal aid.
The page also retains older “SAR” terminology and procedural language. Follow current FAFSA instructions and ask AMBUCS which current submission document it accepts rather than interpreting that older wording as a requirement to obtain an obsolete form.
Enrollment evidence should come from the registrar or an appropriate student record. First-year students who cannot yet obtain that document are directed to contact scholars@ambucs.org. Admission and enrollment evidence are not always the same document; resolve the issue before the deadline.
The personal statement should explain what kind of therapist you want to become, why, and relevant volunteer work, particularly service involving mobility or independence challenges. Describe what you actually did and learned. Do not invent service hours, treatment outcomes, or independent professional authority.
Application deadline versus chapter deadline
AMBUCS publishes an annual February 1–April 1 student application window. Its currently linked portal is labeled 2026. The specific next-cycle opening, closing time, and live 2027 application were not verified as of this article’s research date.
The May 15 chapter sponsorship deadline is not an extension of the student’s April 1 deadline. Submit the student application and required materials under the student rules, then coordinate any separate sponsorship process with the chapter.
The page describes June–August selection and email notifications. Monitor the email you used and report school or program changes to the provider.
Plan for fieldwork and other costs without assuming coverage
An OT or OTA budget may include tuition, fees, books, required equipment, fieldwork travel, temporary housing, transportation, and examinations. List those separately, with due dates.
For every award, ask:
- Which expenses are allowed?
- Who receives the payment?
- Does money arrive before the expense is due?
- Is full-time enrollment required throughout the award period?
- What happens if the program or fieldwork location changes?
- Can it be combined with other aid?
- What must be returned if you withdraw?
A scholarship can be valuable without covering every item. Avoid making an enrollment decision on an award you have not received or on funding whose payment timing does not match your bills.
Protect client privacy in your application
A scholarship statement can discuss a supervised learning experience without sharing names, diagnoses linked to an identifiable person, private assessments, photographs, or medical records. Explain the educational insight and your own role in general terms.
Separate observation from intervention, team responsibilities from your contribution, and planned work from completed work. Accurate scope is more useful than dramatic claims of clinical independence.
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply before entering an OT program?
It depends on the provider. AOTF’s reviewed common rules require current full-time enrollment and at least one completed year of OT coursework. AMBUCS describes acceptance into a qualifying graduate program but also requests enrollment evidence; contact the provider if that evidence is not available yet.
Are OTA students eligible for occupational therapy scholarships?
Some are. AOTF includes OTA programs and has an associate-degree scholarship section. AMBUCS explicitly excludes assistant programs. Check the individual opportunity rather than assuming one answer applies to the whole field.
Does one AOTF application guarantee an award?
No. One application permits matching to qualifying scholarships. It does not remove competition, individual restrictions, rotating availability, or documentation requirements.
Are these awards open now?
The reviewed AOTF call is closed with a January 2027 next-opening notice. AMBUCS’s linked application is for 2026 and its published annual window has passed for that year. Check the new live calls before submitting.
