In short

A useful nursing scholarship shortlist begins with two questions: Are you already a registered nurse, and which degree are you pursuing? An award for an RN entering a bachelor's program is not automatically available to a student earning their first nursing qualification.

A useful nursing scholarship shortlist begins with two questions: Are you already a registered nurse, and which degree are you pursuing? An award for an RN entering a bachelor’s program is not automatically available to a student earning their first nursing qualification. Graduate scholarships can add school affiliations, membership or academic-career requirements.

The comparison below covers four distinct funding routes documented by official providers. It is not a list of awards all due in October, and it does not treat every healthcare scholarship as a nursing-specific award. Public program details and statuses were checked October 14, 2026; annual dates without a printed year are labeled accordingly.

Compare nursing funding by education stage

Official programFunding described by providerWho should investigateApplication timing and limits
Scrubin Uniforms–AACN Scholarship$2,500; three funding cycles each yearCurrently enrolled baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral nursing students at qualifying AACN member schools affiliated with ScrubinAACN’s hub displays Open. Standing third-cycle dates: October 1–December 1; year not printed in the program schedule
Oncology Nursing Foundation Bachelor’s Scholarships$3,000; an individual cannot receive the award more than onceRegistered nurses committed to oncology who are enrolled in, accepted to, or have applied to an eligible bachelor’s nursing program for 2027–28Open September 15, 2026–February 1, 2027; funding available after July 1, 2027
Deborah E. Trautman Future Nurse Leader Scholarship$5,000 package: $3,500 educational expenses and up to $1,500 conference travelEnrolled master’s/doctoral students at eligible AACN member schools affiliated with NursingCAS; GNSA membership and academic-nursing leadership goalsAACN’s hub displays Open. Standing dates: August 31–October 30; confirm the current portal’s cycle year
HRSA Nurse Corps Scholarship ProgramTuition, eligible fees, reasonable educational costs and monthly stipend; not one universal cash maximumAccepted/enrolled students in qualifying accredited U.S. nursing programs meeting citizenship/status and other federal conditions2026 applications closed. Future opening not announced on the inspected page; scholarship requires later service at an eligible critical-shortage facility

Amounts are not promises of selection or full coverage of your expenses. Scrubin’s $2,500 is not three automatic payments to every applicant. Trautman’s $5,000 includes a restricted conference component. Nurse Corps is conditional support, not an unrestricted scholarship with no employment commitment.

Choose a route that fits your nursing stage

Entering your first nursing qualification

Start with awards whose rules explicitly accept pre-licensure students and your program type. Admission to a college is not necessarily admission to its nursing program, and a scholarship may require that classes have already begun.

The AACN Foundation scholarship hub lists entry-level opportunities, but its individual Certiphi-AACN page currently conflicts on the overall fund and recipient count: the introduction describes $15,000 for three students, while another section says $10,000 and two awards. That program is intentionally excluded from the main comparison rather than assigning it an invented current total. If it fits your stage, ask AACN to confirm the live application terms before budgeting an award.

For Scrubin, confirm your school’s exact name on the provider’s eligible-school list. AACN membership alone is insufficient: the school must also have the required Scrubin affiliation. The program accepts baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral enrollment; do not extend that wording to every diploma or associate-degree program.

Next step: Record the credential you are entering, whether you are actively enrolled, and your school’s affiliation. Use that record to eliminate awards whose first screening rule you do not meet.

Already an RN and completing a bachelor’s

The Oncology Nursing Foundation award requires existing RN status and commitment to oncology. It is not a general undergraduate nursing scholarship for someone who has not yet qualified as an RN.

For its 2027–28 competition, the bachelor’s program must be at a CCNE- or NLN-CNEA-accredited nursing school. The provider accepts students currently enrolled, accepted, or applying for the funded academic year. It also requires a signed recommendation on organizational letterhead from a current work supervisor or academic advisor and agreement to participate in a post-graduation survey.

There is a $5 nonrefundable application processing fee. The official instructions explain how to use the payment order number in the application. Pay only through the provider’s linked process; a third-party directory is not an application portal.

Next step: Confirm your RN qualification, program accreditation and 2027–28 enrollment plan. Request the correctly formatted recommendation early rather than assuming an informal email reference meets the requirement.

Graduate study with an academic leadership goal

Trautman is designed for academic-nursing leadership, not every master’s or doctoral career path. Applicants must be currently enrolled and in good standing at an eligible AACN member school affiliated with NursingCAS and belong to the Graduate Nursing Student Academy; AACN says membership is free.

The application includes a concise essay of no more than 500 words, a CV or résumé, three or four goals for the leadership experience, and two recommendations, including one from the dean or director. A signed commitment to complete the three-day leadership-development component is material: failure to complete it forfeits funding under the published terms.

Next step: Ask whether your school and goals fit before pursuing recommendations. Separate the $3,500 educational portion from the conference-travel allowance in your budget; do not count the full package as money available for rent or tuition.

Willing to accept a service commitment after graduation

HRSA’s Nurse Corps program pays specified education costs and a living stipend in exchange for work at an eligible healthcare facility with a critical shortage of nurses. A job at any hospital does not automatically satisfy the obligation. Its public page explains that qualifying facilities are located in, designated as, or serve a Health Professional Shortage Area, and directs applicants to the full program guidance.

Published eligibility includes U.S. citizenship, nationality or lawful permanent residence; acceptance or enrollment in an accredited U.S. nursing degree program; a qualifying class-start date; and conditions concerning federal liens, debt and existing service commitments. Funding preference goes to applicants with the greatest financial need.

The inspected page also says the entire award is taxable. It recommends professional tax advice and notes that state and local taxes are not withheld. That makes the gross funding package different from an unrestricted after-tax stipend.

Next step: Monitor HRSA for the next cycle, then read that cycle’s application and service agreement before applying. Confirm service duration, approved sites, job-search requirements and consequences of noncompliance from the current guidance; do not substitute an older summary for the agreement you would sign.

Prepare materials that answer the actual prompt

Different programs ask for different evidence. Scrubin requests an online application, demographic and academic information, and a short essay. Trautman emphasizes academic leadership, a résumé and senior-school recommendations. Oncology Nursing Foundation asks applicants to connect professional growth and cancer-care impact with its mission.

For the current ONF bachelor’s application, one response is limited to 100 words about professional goals and how education supports them; another allows up to 500 words covering cancer-patient care, professional growth, the foundation’s pillars and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Follow those prompts instead of uploading one generic “why I want to be a nurse” essay everywhere.

Build a private evidence list:

  • Your exact qualification, program and academic stage.
  • A real educational or professional responsibility you held.
  • What you personally did, distinct from what a team did.
  • A specific learning goal supported by the degree.
  • A recommendation writer who can verify relevant work.

Do not invent clinical authority, measurable outcomes or credentials. Keep patient names, identifiable clinical details and private medical records out of ordinary application narratives. A truthful description of your role and learning can be specific without revealing a patient’s identity.

Compare funding with costs it can actually cover

ONF permits tuition, required fees, books, supplies, lab fees and equipment for approved courses in the funded academic year. It excludes course-related travel, and unused funds must be returned. An award that helps tuition may not pay for a distant placement or commuting.

Use a cost sheet separating tuition, required fees, books/equipment, placement travel, living expenses and childcare. Match each line to the selected award’s terms.

Hypothetical planning example: A student has $4,500 in uncovered tuition and required books plus $900 in travel expenses. A confirmed $3,000 award restricted to eligible education expenses would reduce the eligible gap to $1,500, but the $900 travel cost would remain. This is an illustration, not an actual student’s offer or a promise of ONF selection.

Ask your financial-aid office how an outside scholarship changes your package and when it will be credited. ONF’s February application deadline is not an immediate-payment date: its page places funding after July 1, 2027.

Questions to resolve before applying

Can an incoming student use all these awards? No. Scrubin requires current enrollment. Trautman requires current graduate enrollment. ONF accepts a qualifying bachelor’s application or admission, but the candidate must already be an RN.

Does studying nursing make me eligible for any AACN award? No. School membership, partner affiliation, GPA, degree type or academy membership can differ by program.

Are these full-ride scholarships? No blanket claim is justified. Three are defined awards or packages; Nurse Corps covers specified costs under a service contract, with tax and compliance conditions.

Are all applications open? No. The official AACN hub displays open status for Scrubin and Trautman; their standing dates need cycle confirmation. ONF publishes a dated open competition. Nurse Corps’ 2026 application is closed.

What should I do today? Shortlist one or two programs matching your license, degree and institution. Open the official instructions, record the complete-materials deadline and contact your reference writer. Keep closed programs in a monitoring list rather than today’s submission list.
