First decide what you need funded: a degree, a single year, a training program or creative work. Then match the opportunity to your instrument or discipline, student stage, residence and intended school.
The examples below were checked October 17, 2026. This is a practical starting shortlist, not a claim to cover every music scholarship or every instrument. Current applications and previous-cycle watchlists are labeled separately.

1. NSHSS Performing Arts: Music scholarship
NSHSS offers two $2,000 Music awards for its members graduating high school in 2026, 2027, 2028 or 2029. It asks for a short performance video and supporting academic/personal materials.
Prepare the actual Music application
The official Music page lists:
- An educator recommendation letter.
- A performance video no longer than five minutes.
- A response of no more than 500 words explaining what inspired you to become a musical artist, how you express your talent now and your future plans.
- A color headshot suitable for website posting.
- A current official or unofficial transcript.
- An academic resume.
Some search excerpts also mention a short piece description. Check the active form for that field and its limit rather than omitting it because a shorter page extraction did not show it. Requirements on another NSHSS arts page are not automatically the Music requirements.
The advertised deadline is October 27, 2026, 11:59 p.m., with the provider labeling the time zone “EST.” Confirm the dashboard’s time-zone treatment and submit early instead of silently converting the label.
Membership is a restriction, not a benefit guarantee
An applicant must be an NSHSS member. Confirm membership eligibility and any cost before deciding whether to pursue the award. Paying for membership does not guarantee a scholarship.
The public page does not establish four-year renewal, every permitted expense or the exact payment mechanism. Treat it as the stated $2,000 award and ask how funds can be used at your intended institution or program. An award “supporting music” should not be assumed to buy any instrument, recording equipment or travel expense without checking its terms.
2. Berklee merit scholarships: institution-specific funding
Berklee’s scholarship page says entering undergraduate and graduate applicants are automatically considered for merit funding through admissions when applying to the College, Conservatory and Berklee NYC. Berklee Valencia graduate applicants submit a scholarship application through their admissions portal. That exception matters.
This funding is tied to the particular Berklee program. It is not an external award you can take to an unrelated university.
Audition, admission and scholarship are different decisions
Berklee’s undergraduate application instructions explain the form, supplemental materials and audition/interview process. They say in-person and online auditions receive equal weight for admission and scholarship consideration.
Choose the instructions for your actual degree and campus. A Bachelor of Music audition and the admissions evidence for another undergraduate pathway need not be identical. Do not assume a graduate conservatory audition follows the undergraduate College of Music timetable.
The undergraduate deadlines page displays November 1 Early Action, January 15 fall Regular Action and December 1 summer Regular Action, with separate audition/interview and decision periods. Confirm the year and entry term in your active application. A general reference to auditions through March is not permission to ignore an earlier application deadline.
Partial tuition, full tuition and Presidential support
Berklee says most scholarship offers are partial tuition. A limited number of full-tuition awards are available to exceptionally qualified applicants without an additional request for consideration.
The Presidential Scholarship lists a broader package: tuition, on-campus housing, meal plan, laptop, software, major bundles and comprehensive fee, subject to the page’s footnotes and policy. It explicitly does not cover off-campus housing.
Those are different offers. Do not describe a partial-tuition scholarship as full tuition, or full tuition as covering all living costs. Check the written offer for the exact amount, covered terms, eligible program and remaining expenses.
Renewal has conditions
Berklee’s current terms and renewability guidelines generally limit entering-student institutional support to program requirements and up to eight semesters, with stated exceptions for certain programs. Transfer students’ remaining requirements and total eligible semesters matter.
The policy treats at least 12 credits as full time for the full scholarship and requires satisfactory academic progress. It also discusses instrumental-study requirements and academic/disciplinary status. Certain division awards, one-time grants and named funds may not renew.
Scholarships do not automatically increase beyond the initial award amount. If you add a major, extend enrollment, reduce credits or change your study plan, ask how that affects the award. Eight semesters is a limit subject to conditions—not an assurance that all costs for any length of study will be paid.
Need-based aid uses a separate process
Berklee says domestic entering undergraduates submitting the CSS Profile by posted deadlines are automatically considered for institutional need-based grants, with limited funding and priority for high need. Federal aid uses the FAFSA as applicable.
The scholarship page distinguishes the aid year: spring/summer 2027 applicants are directed to the 2026–27 FAFSA, while fall 2027 applicants are directed to 2027–28. Follow the financial-aid instructions for your citizenship, program and start term rather than treating merit consideration as a substitute for required aid forms.
3. Continuing-student music funding
An incoming-student scholarship process does not automatically apply after you enroll. Berklee says continuing undergraduate campus students are automatically considered for certain awards, including Thrive and division awards.
The overview does not establish one common amount, eligibility threshold or renewal rule for every continuing-student award. Ask about your exact stage, campus, enrollment load, academic progress and award type. A one-time grant should not be budgeted as ongoing income, and reconsideration is not the same as guaranteed renewal.
If you are enrolled at another institution, request its continuing-student music funding list. State your instrument/specialization, degree, year and unmet cost. A department may distinguish performance, composition, music education and production pathways; the word “music” alone does not settle eligibility.
4. BMI Composer Awards: original composition, not a general audition
The BMI Composer Awards support young classical composers. The displayed program describes $20,000 in total annual awards, not $20,000 for every winner.
The currently displayed eligibility uses under age 28 on February 15, 2026. It permits applicants resident in the United States or its territories, or citizens of a country in the Western Hemisphere, subject to the complete rules. These are published 2026 conditions, not confirmed 2027 eligibility dates. The page offers a notification signup for the next application opening; this guide does not claim a current live deadline.
Anonymous scores and audio renderings
The published BMI instructions require an anonymized original score and an audio rendering from music-engraving software. The page says only such renderings are accepted to create an equal playing field, with an additional sound file possible for non-notatable elements or electronics.
A professionally performed recording is therefore not automatically the required file. Remove identifying marks as instructed, including identifying score text, and follow the active submission specifications when a new call opens.
Other published restrictions concern previous wins, previously recognized works, publisher/label contracts, duplicate submissions across BMI Foundation programs and permission for text written by others. Do not assume an original song accepted by one competition qualifies for a classical-composition award or may be submitted unchanged to multiple programs.
How to choose an efficient music scholarship shortlist
Match discipline before prestige
A singer, instrumentalist, songwriter and classical composer may need different samples. Choose opportunities that evaluate the work you actually do. Do not stretch a category solely because its maximum award is larger.
Use one accurate evidence record
Keep dates, repertoire, ensemble roles, teachers, credits and competition results consistent across applications. Distinguish your own part in a collaboration from work created by other musicians. Do not invent performances, rankings or professional affiliations.
Plan for recording and rights requirements
Check length, accompaniment, editing, identification and file rules separately. BMI’s anonymous score/audio-rendering process and NSHSS’s performance video are not interchangeable. Obtain permissions for material or collaborators where the provider requires them.
Budget the uncovered costs
List tuition, fees, housing, meals, instrument maintenance, required software/equipment, travel and other study costs. Then mark what each confirmed offer actually pays. Keep possible awards out of the confirmed budget and ask your school how external scholarships affect other aid.
Frequently asked questions
Must I major in music to receive a music scholarship?
The requirement varies. Institution-specific aid requires attending the relevant program, while external competitions can use age, residence, membership or creative-work criteria. Read each award rather than assuming one shared music-major rule.
Can a full-tuition award leave expenses unpaid?
Yes. Full tuition does not by itself mean housing, meals, equipment or every fee. Berklee’s Presidential package lists additional benefits separately and excludes off-campus housing.
Are music scholarships always renewable?
No. Berklee has conditional semester limits and nonrenewable exceptions. NSHSS’s cited page does not establish annual renewal. A composition prize should not be described as four-year tuition aid.
Is the BMI program open for 2027?
The page checked still uses a February 2026 age cutoff and an application-opening notification link. A 2027 opening, age date, deadline or award allocation is not verified here.
