In short

“Middle class” is not an eligibility rule shared by all scholarships. California has a program with that exact name; the national awards below use their own academic, service, age or financial criteria. They are alternatives to investigate, not scholarships reserved for every middle-income household.

Only the first row is a specifically named Middle Class Scholarship. Do not infer from a listing here that the others have a middle-income preference.

California: check the formula and the final offer

CSU explains that MCS uses FAFSA or California Dream Act Application information plus campus data. Other grants and scholarships affect its value, and campus estimates can change when the California Student Aid Commission makes final eligibility determinations. The current CSU rules also require at least six units of degree-required coursework and satisfactory academic progress. MCS eligibility and award calculation.

The practical next move is to ask the campus: “Is the MCS line in my offer estimated or final, and what information remains outstanding?” Do not budget a fixed award based solely on household income. Confirm the ceiling for your dependency category and actual award year using the linked official table, not an older brochure.

Elks: financial need is considered, but membership is not required

Elks evaluates academics, leadership and financial need. Applicants need not be related to an Elks member, but the national contest requires U.S. citizenship at submission; permanent-resident status does not satisfy that rule. High-school graduates are not eligible. Check the full-time degree conditions before starting the application. Elks official application rules.

This is a broader opportunity with a need component, not an income-blind or middle-class-only award. Use your actual financial circumstances; do not assume your self-description either qualifies or disqualifies you.

Coca-Cola: a merit route, currently closed

The Foundation says the award is based on leadership, academics and service rather than financial need. Its FAQ identifies a minimum 3.0 unweighted GPA and detailed eligible immigration-status rules; it also excludes children of Coca-Cola employees from this program. Coca-Cola eligibility FAQ.

The September 30, 2026 deadline has passed. An otherwise eligible senior should not be sent to a supposedly open application. Use this example to understand merit-based funding; do not promise a future application date that the provider has not announced.

Davidson: a project award, not an ordinary essay contest

The Institute requires significant work in an accepted category, specific citizenship/residency conditions and two nominators. Community-service projects alone are not accepted. Its application page still displays the past February 18, 2026 deadline while announcing a fall 2026 opening for 2027. Eligibility and application instructions.

Students with the relevant work can read the category requirements now. An exact 2027 closing date is not verified here; check the provider before scheduling submission.

Build your shortlist by rules, not a label

Record each program’s actual limits, school stage, award restrictions and current cycle. Separate need-based, achievement-based and institution-specific awards. Then ask your college how outside awards would affect the aid package you already have. A hypothetical student with strong service evidence might prioritize Elks now, while a California undergraduate first resolves their MCS estimate; neither should spend time on the closed Coca-Cola cycle.
