Begin with your MD/DO program, the year you will enter when funds are used, and whether a service-linked career genuinely fits your plans. Do not count a pending application as money available for the next tuition bill.

| Program | Who should investigate | Published support/status | Next action |

| AMA Foundation Physicians of Tomorrow | Eligible students entering third or final year at a U.S.-accredited allopathic/osteopathic medical school | $10,000 tuition assistance; current application page says 2027 applications open | Verify deadline directly in the current portal because provider pages conflict |
| NBME/NMF Scholarship | Eligible second-year students at U.S.-accredited medical schools, with financial need and community commitment | $10,000 annually, renewable up to three years; 2026 Cycle 2 closed May 17 | Monitor a new verified cycle; do not submit against the old page |
| NHSC Scholarship Program | Eligible students training for primary-care professions, with service at approved shortage-area sites | Educational-expense support for up to four school years; minimum two-year service | Read current eligibility and agreement before applying |
These are selected programs, not a promise that every medical student qualifies.
Resolve the AMA deadline before relying on it
The AMA Foundation’s application page expands eligibility to students entering their third or final year during 2027–28 and lists January 19, 2027. Its homepage event listing instead shows an end date of January 18. The application page also contains inconsistent academic-year wording. This guide does not silently choose one statement as controlling. Confirm the actual current portal deadline and funded year with the Foundation. Application instructions · Homepage listing.
The Foundation uses an online application, and supporting sections from the school and recommenders must be complete before finalization. Read individual scholarship categories for geographic, interest, and other conditions. Application FAQ · Scholarship categories.
Understand service funding as a career commitment
NHSC scholars provide primary care in Health Professional Shortage Areas at approved sites. The service term depends on support received, with a two-year minimum and four-year maximum. It is not a general award for every medical specialty. NHSC overview.
The provider’s compliance guidance explains that service credit starts only after required licensing/certification and qualifying practice begin. Read the current application guidance and agreement for the details applicable to your training. This article does not interpret your contract or establish eligibility. NHSC requirements.
Ask about approved postgraduate training, placement, timing, and what happens if your plans change before accepting funding. Do not assume any residency or employer meets a service requirement.
Keep scholarship and loan-repayment searches separate
A scholarship can support qualifying education under its terms. A loan-repayment program addresses eligible debt under another agreement. Do not include the same expected funding twice or assume one program’s eligibility applies to the other.
For each lead, record tuition support, stipend if any, payment recipient, covered year, renewal, and obligations. Ask your school’s financial-aid office how a particular outside award would affect your individual package.
Prepare evidence without disclosing patient information
Use a real example of service, research, teamwork, or leadership relevant to the prompt. Describe your actual role and the limits of what you observed. Do not turn supervised participation into a claim of independent clinical responsibility.
Protect confidential information. A hypothetical applicant could explain how an authorized service project informed a learning goal without including identifiable patient stories or private records.
What should you do next?
Confirm your funded training year, choose tuition-only or service-linked routes deliberately, and verify one current application in full. Ask your school’s aid office about institutional awards and nomination requirements as a separate step.
