In short

Mechanical engineering and mechanical engineering technology are related but distinct degree descriptions. A scholarship may include both—or limit support to a particular degree, accreditation or career direction.

Start with the exact program and school stage. Then compare broad mechanical-engineering support with awards aimed at HVAC and refrigeration careers.

ASHRAE’s published 2026–27 awards include a $12,500 Presidents Scholarship and $10,000 Willis H. Carrier Scholarship. These are prior awarded examples—not a promise that a future applicant receives those sums. Official award report.

ASME: degree route affects enrollment rules

ASME requires student membership for its application. Domestic bachelor’s programs need ABET accreditation; qualifying associate/international routes use different accreditation rules. Four-year applicants generally need full-time enrollment, with a final-two-semester exception; two-year/associate applicants may be part-time. One application covers the scholarships and students apply again each year. ASME eligibility.

Do not assume membership alone establishes eligibility. Verify your actual degree, institution, remaining terms and individual award criteria.

Ask the program how your status is treated if you are in a 2+2 transfer plan. A future bachelor’s pathway does not automatically make the current two-year application category irrelevant.

Use the new ASHRAE deadline

ASHRAE’s August 2026 announcement says its previous May 1 and December 1 Society scholarship deadlines were consolidated to April 1. Its current scholarship-program page uses that single deadline. Old brochures and chapter announcements may still display earlier rules. Current announcement · Current program.

Confirm the actual upcoming application and local chapter deadlines separately. Do not assume a chapter scholarship shares the Society’s calendar.

The Society page sets academic criteria including at least a 3.0 GPA and/or top-30% standing and allows only one Society scholarship in a year. Check full degree and career requirements before preparing references. ASHRAE selection rules.

Show an engineering decision with evidence

Choose a real project and explain the problem, constraints, method, your contribution and limits. A hypothetical thermal-design applicant might discuss a tradeoff and how it was evaluated. A mechanism-design applicant could explain a revision after testing.

Distinguish simulations, prototypes and deployed products. Do not invent performance numbers, imply certification, or claim an entire team’s design as your individual work.

Ask permission before sharing proprietary designs, unpublished results or employer material. A scholarship application should use authorized evidence, not confidential files.

Compare tuition and other support

Record the actual amount offered, payment recipient, eligible expenses, funded term, renewal and academic conditions. ASHRAE says awards cannot exceed direct annual educational costs and accepts reapplications under current rules. ASHRAE payment/selection.

Travel grants and professional-experience support are separate benefits. Do not count a conference reimbursement as money for an immediate tuition bill. Keep pending awards separate from confirmed funding and ask your aid office how each award affects the package.

Next step

Confirm ME/MET degree and accreditation, choose broad mechanical or HVAC-focused support, and read the next verified application. Ask your department about separate institutional awards.
