Math funding can come from your own department or a structured research program. A campus scholarship is not portable to every university, and a summer research stipend is not necessarily money for tuition.
Start with institution, enrollment period and the activity you want funded. The selected routes below make those differences explicit.
Compare verified undergraduate routes
Checked October 14, 2026. Individual criteria apply.
| Program | Intended applicant | Verified process/status |
|---|---|---|
| Virginia Tech Carl A. Persinger Scholarship/Fellowship | Eligible students considered through the math department’s process | Individual amount varies; Scholarship Central by end of January and additional department form encouraged |
| Virginia Tech Daniel S. Kim Memorial Scholarship | Eligible students under the same institution’s individual award rules | Amount/current specific criteria not stated; ask the department |
| SIAM-Simons Undergraduate Summer Research | Eligible U.S.-enrolled undergraduates who remain undergraduate in September 2027 and meet U.S. status rules | Weekly stipend plus lodging/meals/travel support; student applications expected late 2026 |
Department totals are not personal offers
Virginia Tech says it typically awards more than $65,000 across over thirty students, mostly continuing students. That is a department-wide historical/typical pool, not one applicant’s scholarship. Its decisions may arrive at the end of spring or beginning of fall. VT math process.
Ask for the current award year, eligibility and payment terms. A named scholarship on a department page does not guarantee every math major can receive it or that funds arrive before registration.
Complete the university form as well as any actual department step. Do not assume an email expressing interest replaces the official application.
A mentor deadline is not the student deadline
SIAM’s page prints August 31, 2026 for summer 2027 mentor applications. The student section instead anticipates a late-2026 opening. Do not submit through the mentor form or treat its past date as the student deadline. SIAM program sections.
The eight-week program pairs students with mentors in applied mathematics/computational science and includes group activities and later presentation support. Read the actual schedule and obligations before assuming it fits a summer job or another program.
Applicants need a statement, transcripts and two recommendations. Coordinate references early, but wait for the new student form’s exact instructions.
Show mathematical thinking with a real example
Explain a question, approach, your role, evidence and limits. A hypothetical modeling project could identify an assumption and how changing it affects the result. A proof-oriented example could explain the strategy without pretending it is a published theorem.
Do not invent grades, publications, software performance or independent contributions. Credit collaborators and ask permission before sharing unpublished material.
For a scholarship statement, answer the actual award focus rather than sending the same general essay to every department or research program.
Avoid mislabeled conference support
AMATYC’s Regional Scholarship covers discounted conference registration for eligible regular members; student members are explicitly ineligible. Its September 15, 2026 date is past. It should not appear as a general student tuition scholarship. AMATYC rules.
SIAM conference support likewise has event-specific purposes. Keep travel, research stipends and tuition awards in separate budget rows.
Next step
Ask your department about its current scholarships, check the next student—not mentor—research call, and record actual amount, eligible costs, payment timing and renewal. Keep pending support separate from confirmed funds.
