In short

Magna cum laude is a Latin graduation distinction commonly rendered “with great praise” or “with high honors.” It is above cum laude and below summa cum laude in the usual hierarchy. The actual requirements depend on the institution and program.

UF’s English Department, for example, connects magna and summa consideration with an honors thesis. That does not mean every college uses a thesis requirement. Official English honors guidance

Ask more than “What GPA do I need?”

QuestionWhat to save
Which academic unit awards it?Governing college and department policy
Which GPA calculation applies?Exact credits and period included
Is a project required?Proposal, supervision and submission rules
When is the decision final?Official evaluation and record timing
What wording is awarded?Confirmed designation

Do not import a threshold from another institution or assume every department at one university uses the same project rules.

Plan the academic work early

If your program requires a thesis or similar project, ask about finding a supervisor, preparation, deadlines and assessment. UF’s English course guidance describes preparatory research and drafting before the thesis semester. Use your own program’s actual process rather than assuming one term is always enough. An original planning example

Imagine a student with a favorable GPA who discovers that the desired distinction also requires an approved project. The next step is to ask whether the project route remains available and how it fits the remaining degree requirements—not to assume the GPA overrides it.

The example is hypothetical. It does not determine eligibility, a deadline exception or the eventual honor.

Keep graduation completion first

Review the plan with an adviser so optional honors work does not obscure required courses or administrative steps. Decide based on the academic value and realistic commitments, not an unsupported claim that the label guarantees employment.

An honors project and the final Latin distinction are related only as the institution’s rules specify. Describe each accurately.

Report the confirmed result

Use the exact awarded wording on a résumé or application. If the honor is still expected rather than final, label that status clearly when the form permits it. Do not upgrade or simplify a designation into something the institution did not award.

If your record appears incorrect, follow the registrar’s review process rather than correcting it only in your own documents.

What to do next

Obtain the program-specific requirements, identify any project obligations and ask when the final designation is recorded. Make a plan around the actual work, not a nationwide GPA myth.
