Start with your exact degree and your actual financial-aid offer. A scholarship for a JD does not automatically support an LLM, and a school-specific award cannot be carried to another university simply because both programs teach law.
This guide compares a verified outside scholarship route with institutional examples at Yale and the University of Virginia. It explains application status, eligibility, renewal, and the questions to ask before treating an award as part of your budget.
Law school scholarship options at a glance
Checked October 17, 2026. Institutional policies below are not a promise of admission or an individual award. Use the current financial-aid instructions for your intended entering class.
| Route | Published benefit | Key eligibility and application route | Timing and limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| LDF Earl Warren / Herbert Lehman law school scholarship application | Generally $15,000 annually for three years, subject to continued criteria; advertised total $45,000 | U.S. citizens entering first or second year of full-time study at qualifying accredited U.S. law schools; financial need and commitment to racial justice/civil rights | Provider announces opening November 30, 2026 and deadline May 1, 2027. Not open as of this research date. One law-school application considers both named programs. |
| Yale Hurst Horizon Scholarship | Full tuition, specified fees, and University hospitalization coverage for eligible Yale JD students | Significant financial need; published family-income and asset criteria plus financial-aid review | School-restricted; annual aid application and financial verification. Not full living-cost coverage. |
| UVA Law institutional scholarships | Published range from $10,000 annually to full tuition | All admitted students automatically considered for merit aid; separate FAFSA/CSS Profile for need consideration | Tied to admission and school policies; renewal subject to good standing and conduct requirements. |
| UVA Karsh-Dillard Scholarship | Full tuition and fees for three years of legal study, plus faculty mentoring | Select UVA scholarship recipients | School-restricted; good standing required. Not a separate award every admitted student receives. |
Do not add an institutional scholarship and an outside award together without asking how the school coordinates them. The amount offered, amount retained, and remaining financing need can differ.
Outside law school scholarships: Earl Warren and the LDF application
The Legal Defense Fund’s Earl Warren Scholarship page announces applications opening November 30, 2026, with a May 1, 2027 deadline. It labels the call “2026–2027”; use the actual portal instructions to confirm the enrollment period the upcoming competition covers rather than guessing from the label.
The program supports rising law students whose commitment to racial justice demonstrates potential for civil-rights and public-interest legal careers. The page includes students entering the first or second year of full-time legal study at accredited law schools in the United States and describes accredited three-year law schools in its FAQ.
Eligibility and selection
The current FAQ says non-U.S. citizens are not being accepted and part-time law students are not eligible. It requires demonstrated financial need. Applicants should also show a genuine, ongoing relationship to the program’s racial-justice and civil-rights purpose, not simply a generic interest in a legal career.
There is no published minimum LSAT or GPA threshold on the reviewed page. LDF says it reviews candidates holistically, considering academic records, test scores, recommendations, volunteer activities, and essays, with no single component determining the award. It accepts GRE scores for applicants who did not take the LSAT.
That does not mean academic evidence is irrelevant or that everyone meeting basic eligibility has the same chance. Present your actual preparation and contribution. If discussing community work, identify your own role and avoid implying that you provided legal advice as a licensed attorney when you did not.
Award amount and renewal
LDF describes awards of $15,000 per year for three years, totaling $45,000, provided the student continues full-time study, remains in good academic standing, and meets other program requirements.
The total should not be described as a $45,000 annual award or unconditional cash payment. Because the page includes students entering either first or second year while advertising a three-year benefit, second-year applicants should confirm how award duration applies to their remaining study. Do not invent an additional year of payments beyond enrollment.
Recipients may apply for LDF internships, externships, or guided research projects, but those opportunities are not guaranteed. They require separate competitive applications. A scholarship offer is not an employment offer or an assurance of a future legal position.
Application preparation
The FAQ requires two recommendations and advises contacting writers early. It also requests FAFSA documentation with the relevant income amount completed to demonstrate need. Follow the live portal’s current document instructions, particularly where terminology differs from current FAFSA reporting.
The provider says one law-school application considers candidates for both the Herbert Lehman and Earl Warren programs. This is not evidence that a law student should also submit the separate undergraduate scholarship application or that both named benefits will be stacked automatically.
The reviewed page describes decisions in August/September but does not provide a precise new-cycle decision date or closing time zone. Keep those details unconfirmed until the current application provides them. Obtain the complete essay prompts, transcript requirements, payment terms, and ongoing reporting instructions before submitting.
Need-based institutional funding: Yale’s Hurst Horizon Scholarship
The Hurst Horizon Scholarship Program provides full-tuition support to eligible Yale JD students with significant financial need. It is institutional funding, not an outside award for use at any law school.
The published criteria describe family income up to 200% of the federal poverty guidelines and family assets below $150,000. Those conditions do not mean you can determine eligibility from one number on a tax return without the financial-aid office’s review.
Yale evaluates student, parental household, and spousal information as applicable. The FAQ says significant student or spousal income/assets can reduce or prevent an award. Where a parent has been waived from the financial-aid process because of extraordinary circumstances, that parent’s information is ignored under the stated rules.
The page links federal poverty guidelines, including a dated reference in one FAQ. Use the current financial-aid office’s applicable year and household-size rules rather than substituting an old dollar threshold into a new application.
Which degrees and students qualify?
Hurst Horizon is for enrolled JD students in good standing. The page says international and non-citizen JD students may qualify, with foreign income and assets converted to U.S. dollars for review. That is different from LDF’s reviewed U.S.-citizenship requirement.
The scholarship is not available to LLM, JSD, or MSL students under the published Hurst Horizon policy. Those students should investigate their program’s separate financial-aid process.
Joint-degree JD students may qualify during terms when enrolled at the Law School. Do not assume the scholarship follows you into every term at a partner school.
Full tuition is not the same as full cost of attendance
Yale specifies tuition, administrative and activities fees, and University hospitalization coverage. Its page separately identifies room and board, personal expenses, books, and travel as costs outside that scholarship coverage.
Those remaining expenses can be substantial even when tuition is covered. Compare the current cost-of-attendance schedule with your actual award, not a headline suggesting that all law-school costs disappear.
The page contains a dollar example of cost of attendance minus scholarship and remaining unit loan. Because costs change by academic year, verify your own entering year’s figures instead of copying that example into a three-year financing projection.
Documents, payment, and annual review
Yale assesses eligibility through financial information provided in FAAST and requires tax returns and other documentation to verify it. Aid can be adjusted or revoked if the documentation differs from reported information in a way that affects eligibility.
Students age 29 or older are not automatically exempt from parental information for Hurst Horizon. The FAQ describes parental tax returns, W-2s, and a Parent Supplemental Form for those applicants.
The award is made annually and disbursed in equal amounts at the start of each semester. Recipients must reapply for financial aid each year and provide required documentation. The page describes renewal after satisfactory completion of requirements, while reserving reassessment if an extraordinary improvement in family finances makes a substantial contribution possible.
That is more precise than either “never renewable” or “guaranteed unchanged for three years.” Confirm the current handbook, annual deadlines, and your own financial-aid determination.
Merit and need consideration at the University of Virginia
The UVA Law scholarship page says all admitted students are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships, with no separate scholarship application required. Consideration follows submission of a complete admissions application.
The published range begins at $10,000 per year and extends to full tuition awards. Most scholarships are merit-based, with merit described broadly to include academic performance and other accomplishments and experiences. Some awards also consider financial need.
Automatic consideration is not automatic selection. Do not interpret the published range as a minimum scholarship every admitted student will receive.
For need consideration, UVA directs admitted students to complete the FAFSA and CSS Profile. It requires parental CSS Profile information for unmarried applicants age 28 or younger when applying, even when parents do not plan to contribute. Ask the financial-aid office how the requirements apply to unusual family circumstances or eligibility for particular forms.
Karsh-Dillard full-tuition funding
UVA’s Karsh-Dillard Scholarship page says recipients receive an amount sufficient to cover full tuition and fees for three years of legal study while remaining students in good standing. It also describes faculty mentoring.
This is a selected institutional scholarship, not a portable national award. Full tuition and fees do not, by themselves, establish coverage for housing, food, books, travel, or every other cost.
UVA’s general scholarship policy says entering-student awards renew for the second and third years if recipients remain in good academic standing and maintain conduct appropriate to prospective members of the profession. Dual-degree funding is subject to program agreements and applies when the Law School is the student’s school of record; it is not portable to every partner-school semester.
Use the award letter to confirm its actual value, covered charges, and renewal conditions. The reviewed scholarship pages do not establish a separate exact current application deadline for each institutional award; use the current admissions and aid calendar for your entering class.
How to compare law school scholarship offers
Build a separate row for each academic year, not just the first-year offer. For each school, record:
- Tuition and required fees.
- Health-insurance charges and waiver conditions.
- Housing, food, books, transport, and other living costs.
- Confirmed grants and scholarships.
- Any loan amount, kept separate from free aid.
- Award duration and annual application requirements.
- Grade, class-rank, good-standing, conduct, or service conditions, if any.
- Outside-scholarship coordination and transfer or joint-degree rules.
Then calculate the remaining financing gap using the actual current-year costs and confirmed awards. Do not treat an unknown item as zero. Do not count a loan as a scholarship simply because both appear in the same aid package.
Read renewal conditions literally
Ask whether an award requires only ordinary good academic standing or a higher GPA or class rank. Those are not the same condition. Request the school’s current scholarship retention disclosures and ask how many recipients have had comparable awards reduced or eliminated.
Do not assume another student’s past outcome predicts yours. If a condition is unclear, obtain written clarification before committing to a deposit or declining another offer.
Check how outside aid changes institutional support
An outside scholarship may affect the amount or composition of a school’s financial-aid package. Ask whether it reduces loans, institutional grants, expected contributions, or another component under that school’s policy.
The three providers discussed here do not establish a universal answer for every combination. Do not promise that a $15,000 outside award always reduces borrowing by exactly $15,000 without reviewing the school’s coordination rules.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a law school scholarship without a minimum LSAT score?
Some programs do not publish a minimum. LDF’s reviewed Earl Warren FAQ expressly says there is no minimum LSAT or GPA requirement and accepts GRE scores. That does not remove the rest of its eligibility or holistic review criteria.
Are full-tuition law scholarships full rides?
Not necessarily. Tuition and fees may be covered while living expenses remain. Yale’s Hurst Horizon policy explicitly distinguishes covered charges from room, board, books, travel, and personal expenses. Check each award’s actual coverage.
Are international students eligible?
It depends on the award. Yale’s Hurst Horizon policy includes qualifying international and non-citizen JD students. The reviewed LDF policy does not accept non-U.S. citizens. Do not apply one provider’s rule to the whole field.
Can part-time or LLM students apply for the same awards?
Not automatically. LDF excludes part-time study in its current FAQ, and Hurst Horizon is JD-only. Look for opportunities that explicitly accept your degree and enrollment format.
When should I start preparing?
Before the application opens, gather accurate financial records, identify recommendation writers, and confirm each provider’s requirements. Use the actual live prompts and current-year instructions once available, rather than treating preparation as a submitted application.
