In short

Humanities funding depends on where you are in the research pathway. A campus undergraduate fellowship, a scholarship selected during junior year for future graduate study, and a dissertation-writing fellowship serve different needs.

Start with your current degree, research goals and funded period. The selected programs below are research-oriented, not a universal list for every humanities student.

Beinecke: application year and funding year differ

Beinecke requires U.S. citizenship or specified U.S.-national status and a documented need-based-aid history. Its award is distributed over up to five years for graduate study. Nominated students submit financial information separately by March 31, 2027, 5 p.m. ET. Beinecke current rules.

Do not count the full award as cash available for next semester’s undergraduate bill. Ask the campus liaison about internal selection, materials and timing before preparing an application.

A participating institution may nominate one student; meeting basic eligibility does not guarantee nomination or selection. Use the actual current partner list rather than assuming every college participates.

Mellon Mays: the campus administers the program

Mellon says it does not award MMUF directly to individual students. Member institutions recruit and select fellows, often in spring of sophomore year, with local variation. Typical materials include academic-purpose and experience statements, recommendations, transcript and interview. National MMUF process.

Local degree/field and participation rules matter. Barnard’s program, for example, distinguishes humanities/humanistic social-science fields and excludes certain interdisciplinary education graduate programs from graduate benefits. Do not generalize one campus’s rules to every member institution. Institutional example.

Ask your coordinator whether your field and intended graduate pathway fit. Do not invent an academic career intention merely to qualify.

Dissertation funding requires the right stage

Newcombe is for the final substantive writing year, not a general first-year graduate award. Its provider requires appropriate dissertation progress and a project whose relevant questions are central rather than incidental. Newcombe eligibility.

A hypothetical applicant should distinguish completed research from chapters still to write. Explain a realistic work plan and contribution without claiming an unwritten argument is already established.

Read the current guide for degree, institutional, completion-date and recommendation conditions. An old university announcement may not reflect the sponsor’s updated process.

Make humanities evidence concrete

Describe the question, sources, approach, your contribution and limits. A literary project could explain how a reading changes an interpretation; a history project could distinguish archival evidence from inference. Do not invent sources, interviews, translations or publications.

Protect participant information and respect archive, image and reproduction permissions. Ask an adviser what may be shared when the work is unpublished or sensitive.

Compare funding categories

Record tuition, stipend, research costs, funded period, payment recipient, renewal and any duties separately. A travel award is not automatically tuition funding, and a graduate award may not pay a current undergraduate bill.

Keep pending applications out of confirmed support. Ask the institution how external awards affect your individual package and whether overlapping fellowships may be held together.

Next step

Identify your stage, verify campus participation or dissertation fit, and coordinate references/nomination before the actual deadline.
