AHLA: school nomination does not complete an application
AHLA says your school need not be affiliated for you to apply. If a school nominates you, you still need to complete the scholarship application; the process can consider school-nominated and eligible self-nominated awards. See the official current instructions.
Ask your hospitality department whether it has a nomination route and what you must complete yourself. Do not infer that a nomination guarantees selection or that every hospitality student meets every named award’s conditions. When the December cycle launches, record the exact eligibility and closing date from the application.
The page states December 2026, not an exact day. Add a reminder to check the page that month rather than inventing a December 1 opening date.
NRAEF: prepare for the published 2027 window
NRAEF’s current scholarship page identifies January 15 through March 15, 2027 as the next application window. The provider’s application portal repeats those dates and supplies its FAQs and terms.
The January 2026 announcement describes the earlier cycle’s $2,500–$10,000 range and education-expense uses. That is evidence about 2026–27, not a promise that 2027 awards will have the same amounts.
Your next step is to prepare a clear academic and career summary, then read the new application’s enrollment, residency, eligible-field and documentation rules when published. A restaurant career can involve more than cooking, but do not decide that your particular major qualifies until the sponsor confirms it.
Travel support is a different budget line
AHLA’s travel program identifies an audience and conference-access purpose. It does not establish that every reader can submit a direct application now. Ask the Foundation or your department about participation.
Keep tuition and industry travel separate in your budget. If you need a conference opportunity, write down registration, transportation, lodging and meal costs, then ask which expenses the program actually covers. Do not count travel funding against tuition unless the provider explicitly permits that use.
Show service and operations experience clearly
Use specific responsibilities rather than vague claims that you are “passionate about hospitality.” An original hypothetical example: Elena worked at a hotel front desk and helped update a late-arrival checklist. In her planning notes, she explains the problem, her contribution, what she learned about guest communication, and the hospitality courses she wants to take next.
Do not invent guest-satisfaction percentages or claim that you redesigned an entire operation if you assisted with one task. Work experience, volunteer events and class projects can all be described accurately; the application decides which categories count.
Make a shortlist with provider, sector, current cycle, eligible degree, expense restrictions and next action. Put future rounds on reminders and confirmed awards in a separate budget column.

Do I have to attend an AHLA-affiliated school? The current page says not for the overall application; individual award conditions still apply.
Can I apply to the 2027 NRAEF round now? Its published opening is January 15, 2027, which is still in the future as of this check.
