A scholarship does not have to be exclusive to tenth grade to accept a sophomore. What matters is whether the current provider rules admit your grade or age, and whether you can meet the actual application requirements. This short list identifies two real programs without pretending they are sophomore-only or that both are currently accepting applications.
Verified opportunities and cycle status
Checked October 13, 2026.
| Program | Why a sophomore may fit | Benefit | Deadline/status |
|---|---|---|---|
| VFW Voice of Democracy | Grades 9–12 in qualifying school settings; read geographic and full entry rules | National first-place award up to $35,000; other awards differ | Submit to a participating local VFW Post by midnight October 31, 2026 |
| Davidson Fellows | Age 18 or younger at deadline, with significant completed work and full eligibility | Provider lists $100,000, $50,000, and $25,000 scholarships | 2026 closed; provider says 2027 opens fall 2026, but a dated opening/deadline was not verified |

Both include broader groups than sophomores. Neither is a guaranteed award for signing up.
Voice of Democracy: the submission route is part of the work
This is an audio-essay competition, not just a written essay upload. The 2026–27 theme is “What a Veteran Taught Me About America.” Use the current official entry form and identify a participating Post before recording or submitting.
Your planning checklist should include the current prompt, recording requirements, completed form, written version if required by the rules, delivery method, and confirmation of receipt. Verify how the Post receives entries and what its midnight deadline means locally. Do not assume an email sent to an unrelated office counts as a valid entry.
Davidson: a completed project, not an ordinary activity list
Davidson requires significant work in a recognized category. Its current application instructions explicitly reject community service projects and statements about a future major as eligible submissions. There is a two-part process, including initial eligibility review before the full category materials and nominations. Official application instructions

If you have a substantial project, compare your actual work with the category requirements. If you have only an idea, put this in a development or monitoring list rather than calling yourself ready to apply. The visible February 18, 2026 deadline is historical and must not be reused as a 2027 deadline.
How to choose between the two routes
Illustrative scenario: one student has a strong interest in interviewing a veteran and producing a recorded essay but no completed research or artistic portfolio. Voice of Democracy may be worth an eligibility check; Davidson is not a substitute simply because its largest award is higher.
Another student has a completed advanced project. Their first step is to check category criteria and ask potential nominators whether they can evaluate the work. The decision is about fit and evidence, not headline award size.
Don’t spend sophomore year applying to the wrong grade
Save junior- and senior-only awards in a future list. For each current opportunity, record:
- Grade or age rule and the date it is measured
- Citizenship/residency or school-location restrictions
- Required product: essay, recording, portfolio, or project
- Official cycle and deadline
- Who must submit supporting material
- How and when college funding may be used
Ask the provider about payment timing before assuming a sophomore award pays a current school bill. This page does not verify advance disbursement terms.
