In short

Freshmen can consider programs whose official rules include ninth grade, but that does not make those programs freshman-only. Begin with the current entry rules and the work required. This is a small verified shortlist, not a claim that 210 awards are open to every ninth grader.

JFK: understand the rules before drafting

The current rules require an original essay of 700–1,000 words, at least five sources, citations and a bibliography, and a nominating teacher. Identifying information must not appear in the uploaded essay or filename. The provider says essays or bibliographies with detected AI assistance are disqualified. Do not use AI-generated submission text; follow the provider’s exact originality policy. Official requirements

Your next move is to read the current prompt and exclusions with your teacher, then develop your own research plan. This article explains eligibility and process; it does not provide a contest essay.

VFW: check the audio-entry process

Voice of Democracy is an audio-essay competition, so a written response alone is not the application. The current theme and entry form are available on the national youth-scholarship page. Contact the participating Post and verify the delivery method before you prepare the final recording.

Create a checklist for the prompt, current form, recording requirements, supporting text, and receipt confirmation. Do not accidentally use Patriot’s Pen instructions: that is a separate middle-school program, not this high-school competition.

AFSA: a visible form does not mean the cycle is open

AFSA’s current main contest page explicitly says the submission window is closed. Other pages and forms remain accessible. Read the main cycle announcement before assuming a form is accepting valid new entries. The published parent-employment restriction also matters; this contest should not be confused with AFSA’s separate awards for Foreign Service families. AFSA contest page

Save the provider link to a future list. Do not invent a 2027 prompt or reuse a historical deadline as the next opening date.

A freshman’s preparation folder

Suggested contents: the current official rules, school contact information, a basic activity/work record, sources for any research project, and submission receipts. Ask a trusted adult to help review terms before sharing personal information or agreeing to publicity conditions.

Illustrative decision: if your current project has no research sources, a five-source essay requirement is an unfinished task, not a reason to fabricate a bibliography. Select a competition whose requirements you can genuinely complete.

Keep awards you are not yet eligible for in a “later grades” list. That prevents junior-only or senior-only scholarships from crowding your current application queue.
