In short

A firefighting scholarship may target a specific degree, an active volunteer responder, or the family of a firefighter who died in the line of duty. These categories are not interchangeable. A general interest in the profession does not establish eligibility for a membership or survivor-family award.

Official pages were checked October 13, 2026. One degree program below has an explicitly announced 2027 application window; the 2026 NVFC/CSU competition has already closed.

FAMA: check your exact degree and learning format

The Turner scholarship covers full-time sophomores, juniors, or seniors in qualifying four-year degrees, as well as qualifying full-time master’s students. FAMA names fire protection engineering and fire administration and specifies traditional classroom learning at accredited four-year institutions in the U.S. or Canada.

That does not automatically include every fire science certificate, online course, or fire academy. Ask the provider if your degree title or format is unclear before preparing an application.

FAMA requires online submission and says professors or department heads must send recommendation letters directly; letters emailed by applicants are not accepted. It may award an additional $2,500 scholarship from the same applicant pool, but that additional award is not guaranteed. Use the explicit 2027 application dates rather than an old recipient announcement.

Volunteer awards: membership is not the only condition

The NVFC/CSU announcement confirms two 2026 awards covering up to 60 credit hours toward one CSU online degree. Its 2026 opportunities schedule lists the August 17 closing date.

Do not interpret an old headline saying applications are open as today’s status. Monitor the next announcement and retrieve complete eligibility and tuition terms when it appears. Membership alone does not prove an applicant satisfies every condition, and a credit-hour benefit should not be converted into an invented cash amount.

Family scholarships are not firefighting-major requirements

NFFF’s programs assist qualifying spouses, life partners, children, and stepchildren. Its main route supports multiple education types and fields; certain partner funds have public-safety or STEM restrictions. Children and stepchildren must be under 30 and have been under 22 when the firefighter died.

The NFFF application guide explains the financial assessment. Use it to establish the relevant family’s eligibility instead of assuming any first-responder relationship qualifies.

IAFF’s McClennan application specifies that the parent must have been an IAFF member in good standing at death. New and renewal applicants submit materials annually. The webpage and linked form differ on award-notification timing, so this guide deliberately does not promise a payment date; confirm that directly with IAFF.

Match the award to the training bill

Separate degree tuition from academy charges, protective equipment, books, travel, and certification expenses. Ask whether the award permits each expense and whether it pays the school or student. Do not count a department equipment grant as personal education funding.

Illustrative decision: an enrolled fire administration junior checks FAMA, an active volunteer monitors NVFC’s next cycle, and a survivor-family student reviews the appropriate family program even if studying a different major. The useful shortlist follows those actual connections.
