Fashion scholarships are not only for students designing garments. The Fashion Scholarship Fund describes opportunities across design and product development, merchandising, marketing, and business strategy. CFDA’s scholarship fund focuses on fashion design and related study. Choose the application route that fits your work rather than sending the same portfolio everywhere. Checked October 14, 2026. The latest FSF competition deadline has already passed; CFDA’s exact 2027 dates must be checked when individual briefs are available.
| Route | Intended applicant | Funding/status | What to do next |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSF Case Study Scholarship | Eligible full-time sophomores, juniors, and seniors pursuing a first four-year degree at a U.S. institution | FSF’s student overview describes $10,000–$25,000 awards; October 12, 2026 deadline has passed | Ask FSF about the next competition; do not submit against an assumed extension |
| CFDA Scholarship Fund | Generally full-time undergraduate juniors and first-year graduate students in relevant study; individual rules vary | Amount varies; provider expects March/April 2027 deadlines, depending on scholarship | Read each new brief when released |
| FSF Community Colleges Initiative | Community college students in studies applicable to fashion, including marketing/business operations | Current amount and deadline not stated on the overview | Use the initiative’s own eligibility and timeline, not the four-year competition rules |
These are distinct routes, not three interchangeable applications for every fashion student.
Check the competition deadline—not just the class year
The FSF page calls its latest competition the 2027 competition but gives an application deadline of October 12, 2026. As of October 14, that deadline is past. A “2027” label does not mean applications remain open into the next calendar year. Official FSF deadline.
FSF also says otherwise-eligible students outside its member-school network may compete. Do not rule yourself out solely because your school is not a member; read the complete current requirements and ask the FSF team about the next cycle. FSF eligibility.
Match the submission to the route
For a business or merchandising case study, define the customer or industry problem, show the evidence, explain your recommendation, and separate assumptions from established facts. An attractive presentation does not replace a defensible argument.
For a design portfolio, select work showing concept, material choices, development, and execution. Identify your own contribution to collaborative projects. Do not imply you produced a garment or commercial collection when the work was a concept only.
Hypothetical example: a project about clothing accessibility could use documented user needs to explain a design choice. A merchandising project could distinguish observed customer behavior from a forecast. Neither should invent interviews, market figures, or sales outcomes.
Check whether you will still be enrolled
CFDA says applicants generally need at least one semester remaining after selection and disbursement. Its FAQ explains that a student graduating before payment may not qualify. It also says associate-level and non-U.S.-citizen students may be eligible under individual scholarship conditions; high school students who have not enrolled are not eligible. CFDA eligibility FAQ.
Write down your expected graduation date before preparing a portfolio. Ask how that date aligns with the specific scholarship’s payment schedule rather than assuming your current class label is enough.
Compare funding and obligations separately
For each scholarship, record the amount offered, eligible expenses, payment destination, and any internship or participation conditions. Do not treat a program-wide funding total as the amount an individual student can receive.
CFDA says funds are generally sent to the student’s school and disbursement timing varies. Confirm the actual award terms before budgeting. CFDA payment guidance.
