Use your institution’s current academic calendar and program instructions. There is no single national fall start date, and “semester begins” may not be the same event as the first class, orientation or move-in.
Berkeley’s official student page lists August 26 as the first day of Fall 2026 instruction. That date is already past as of October 14, 2026; it is an example, not an upcoming deadline. Berkeley key dates
Put four dates on separate lines
| Date | Where to verify it |
|---|---|
| First required academic activity | Program or instructor instructions |
| Instruction begins | Official academic calendar |
| Orientation | Orientation office or program |
| Housing access | Actual housing assignment and contract |
Berkeley separately publishes orientation and academic-calendar resources. Use the relevant page rather than assuming one date covers everything. Orientation · Academic calendar
Check your actual session
A short course, professional program or different term system may not follow a general undergraduate semester calendar. Record the exact program and course session before booking travel or arranging work.
Do not copy last year’s date into a new-year plan just because it fell on a similar weekday.
An original planning example
Imagine a student’s first class is on a Wednesday but the housing assignment permits arrival earlier and orientation has separate activities. The student should map all three requirements rather than choosing an arrival date solely from the academic-calendar heading.
The example is hypothetical and establishes no campus attendance or housing policy.
Work backward from confirmed requirements
List the tasks that must be done before arrival: registration, records, required equipment and any institution-specific steps. Assign dates only after checking the actual instructions.
If a deadline is unclear, ask the responsible office. A housing question may not be answered by an academic adviser, and an academic-calendar page may not explain your travel or visa situation.
Compare calendar years carefully
Keep the academic year visible in the file name or note. If the next fall’s calendar is not published, mark the date unconfirmed instead of using a prior year as fact.
Do not confuse a date when a term is administratively opened with the first time you must attend.
What to do next
Save the official calendar, identify your session and confirm orientation and housing separately. Book plans around the actual requirements, not a generic statement that college starts in August or September.
