In short

Exercise science scholarships often use narrower field definitions than a college's major title. An exercise science student pursuing strength and conditioning may fit an award that another exercise science student does not. Compare your degree, career direction, and academic stage with the official criteria before paying a membership fee or requesting references.

Verified awards to investigate

NSCA Foundation — scholarship rules

The two NSCA awards require transcripts and three recommendations or completed recommendation rubrics, with limits on previous wins and conflicts of interest. Use the current award-specific portal instructions; the public page uses different recommendation terminology by award. International applicants may apply under the published scholarship guidance. A useful preparation note connects real coursework, placements, coaching responsibilities, or research to the required field. “My major is health-related” is too broad. Do not claim a certification, clinical responsibility, or coaching outcome you have not earned.

SHAPE America — grants and scholarships

SHAPE America — grants and scholarships

SHAPE’s undergraduate award requires at least junior standing, a 3.5 overall GPA, current membership, and first-time-recipient status. Students can join at application. The listed fields are specific: a kinesiology or exercise science label alone does not establish eligibility. Ask SHAPE how your program is classified before applying. Prepare a field-specific application

Build a one-page evidence sheet with three columns: the provider’s requirement; the document proving it; and the person or office who can supply that document. Include all colleges attended when transcripts are required, rather than assuming only the current institution matters.

For references, approach people who can describe your actual work. Give them the official rubric, your current résumé, and a short summary of the contribution they observed. Ask whether their submission must arrive independently; an applicant’s completed form does not necessarily finish a reference requirement.

Illustrative statement outline: A student interested in strength and conditioning could explain a course that shaped their interest, a supervised experience they actually completed, and how further study would develop a specific skill. Replace every example with true personal evidence. Do not borrow a fictional athlete’s improvement or a made-up internship to sound persuasive.

Separate tuition awards from research and travel support

ACSM Foundation — funding opportunities

ACSM Foundation — funding opportunities

ACSM’s funding page includes research, program, leadership, and training support. Those opportunities can be useful, but a research or conference award is not automatically a tuition scholarship. Review eligible expenses and applicant stage separately. ACSM Foundation funding.

Also ask your department about donor awards attached to your exact major. Bring the program name and degree stage to that conversation; an institutional award may have a different definition from a professional association.

Frequently asked questions

Are these awards for high-school seniors? The table is primarily for college-level study; do not infer high-school eligibility from the topic. Check the selected provider’s rules.

Do I need membership for everything? Membership is required for the listed awards. Compare eligibility and actual application requirements before joining solely to seek funding.

What is my next step? Screen degree fit first, check the provider’s portal second, and request transcripts and references only for awards you can reasonably pursue.
