The selected providers below cover different audiences. A national application and a local section award can also require separate submissions, even when they use the same society name.

| Program | Who should investigate | Support/status | First action |
|---|---|---|---|
| SWE Society-selected scholarships | Eligible engineering, engineering-technology and CS students under stage/location rules | Individual amount varies; collegiate/graduate opens December 1, 2026; published closing dates conflict | Confirm the controlling deadline when the real application opens |
| NSPE Steinman Scholarship | Eligible undergraduates entering/continuing junior year in a four-year ABET-accredited engineering program | $5,000; April 15, 2026 deadline passed | Monitor next cycle and read individual criteria |
| ScholarSHPE | Eligible active SHPE members in U.S./territory accredited two-/four-year STEM study | Individual amount varies; published 2026 application dates are past | Check the next actual common application |
Resolve SWE’s deadline conflict
SWE’s overview lists February 8, 2027 for collegiate/graduate closing, but its linked interest form lists January 31. The interest form explicitly says it is not the scholarship application. This guide does not silently choose one date as certain. SWE overview · Linked interest form.
The overview separately lists first-year and India applications opening February 8, 2027 and closing March 31. Read the actual stage/location rules before applying; a college sophomore should not use the first-year form simply because it opens later.
SWE’s local sections have their own criteria and application processes. The Golden Gate Section, for example, lists Bay Area boundaries, eligible gender categories and an April 9, 2027 deadline. That is not the national deadline or nationwide eligibility. Section distinction · Golden Gate example.
Program accreditation and stage matter
NSPE’s page lists undergraduate and graduate awards separately. Its Auxiliary Legacy award is for eligible female junior-year undergraduates, while its Kimel scholarship adds Kansas/Missouri residence and institutional conditions. Do not generalize Steinman’s rules to every award. NSPE individual categories.
Write your exact program, accreditation, current year, expected graduation and school on the shortlist. Institutional accreditation and a named engineering-program accreditation are different questions.
Ask the sponsor how an engineering-technology or transfer route is classified instead of assuming every program with engineering in its name qualifies.
Membership is not the only requirement
ScholarSHPE’s common criteria include active membership, at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA, an intended STEM degree and qualifying U.S./territory enrollment. Sponsor-specific scholarships add conditions. One common application does not mean every applicant qualifies for every sponsor’s award. SHPE rules.
Do not infer an identity requirement or exemption that the actual award does not state. Use the individual criteria and ask the provider when uncertain.
Show an engineering decision, not a tool list
Choose a real problem, constraints, method, your role, evidence and limits. A hypothetical applicant could explain why testing changed a design choice. Do not invent patents, efficiency gains, user counts or professional responsibility for a built system.
Credit collaborators and protect proprietary designs, private data and unpublished results. Ask permission before attaching employer or research material. A clear account of a small contribution is stronger than an inflated claim.
Compare actual funding terms
Record amount offered, payment recipient, eligible expenses, funded year, renewal and obligations. Program-wide totals and historical maximums are not personal awards.
Ask your aid office how outside support affects your individual package. Keep pending applications separate from confirmed money and do not assume awards can be combined without checking.
Next step
Confirm degree/accreditation and stage, choose the right national/local route, and read the actual application rather than an interest form or old announcement.
