Economics funding is easier to evaluate when you separate two different goals: paying for your current degree and preparing for advanced study. A departmental scholarship may help an enrolled economics major with educational costs. A funded summer program can instead provide training, housing, travel and a stipend without paying the next academic year’s tuition.

The opportunities below include both types. Only the AEA entry has a verified 2027 application deadline in the sources reviewed. The university scholarships are restricted to students at the named institution, and their pages do not establish that a new application window is open. Start with the eligibility column rather than treating every listing as an application you can submit today.

These are not interchangeable awards. The AEA program funds a specific summer experience; the four named university scholarships are campus-specific degree-support opportunities. Provider sources establish the terms summarized here, not a guarantee of selection or a complete funding package for your degree.Official sourceOfficial sourceOfficial source

1. AEA Summer Program: funded preparation for doctoral economics

The American Economic Association’s 2027 Summer Program runs May 31–July 23, 2027. Its intensive coursework covers microeconomics, mathematics, econometrics and research methods. This is an option to investigate if you want to test your interest in research and strengthen preparation for graduate economics—not a general scholarship that you can redirect toward another college’s tuition.Official source

The application page says successful, eligible students receive a $3,250 stipend, round-trip travel to and from Washington, DC, and room and board on campus for the program’s duration. Research and presentation opportunities are included. All U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for scholarship assistance; that statement does not promise admission or funding to every applicant.Official source

Who should investigate it?

The provider describes an ideal applicant as enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree-granting institution in the United States, Puerto Rico or another U.S. territory, with at least two years of undergraduate education, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and a strong interest in a doctoral degree. These are presented as ideal applicant characteristics; do not silently turn that wording into a different set of absolute eligibility rules. Applicants with an unusual educational pathway should ask the program directly.Official source

What to prepare

The 2027 application requires Fall 2026 college transcripts, a résumé, two short-essay responses, and two recommendation letters with at least one from faculty. You need an active AEA member account or a free non-member account to use the portal. The complete application must be received by January 31, 2027; an incomplete submission will not be reviewed.Official source

Next action: Open the 2027 AEA application page, read the live essay questions, and request recommendations early. Ask a faculty member who can discuss your quantitative preparation, intellectual curiosity and readiness for intensive coursework. Do not presume the stipend covers every personal expense or that participating replaces degree requirements at your home institution.

2. Morris Family Forever Scholarship: need-based support at SUNY Oswego

The Morris Family Forever Scholarship is for matriculated, full-time SUNY Oswego students with financial need and a declared economics major. The page specifies a minimum of 12 credit hours. Students apply during sophomore or junior year for support in the following academic year.Official source

The GPA language deserves careful reading. First preference goes to students with an economics-program GPA of at least 3.5. If no qualified applicant meets that preference, the page describes a second preference for a qualified candidate with a GPA between 3.2 and 3.5 in the economics program. Calling this simply a “3.5 minimum GPA scholarship” would misrepresent the published selection structure.Official source

The reviewed page does not state an award amount, current application deadline or renewal promise. Do not build a tuition budget around an assumed value.

Next action: Contact the Oswego Economics Department through its official scholarship page. Ask for the current application form, award year, amount, deadline and method for documenting need. The page’s named-contact line and linked email do not match, so use the department’s general contact details rather than assuming the individual contact is current.

3. Richard Pace ‘87 Scholarship: an applied and quantitative economics fit

The Richard Pace ‘87 Scholarship for Applied Economics Studies requires a declared major within Oswego’s economics department and a cumulative SUNY Oswego GPA of at least 3.2. Students apply in sophomore or junior year for an award in the subsequent academic year.Official source

Preference goes to an applied mathematical economics major or a minor in a quantitative field such as applied statistics, business analytics, mathematics or computer science. A preference is not the same as a requirement: students should not invent a mandatory computer science minor, nor assume that any quantitative coursework guarantees priority.Official source

If this profile fits, prepare evidence of how you use quantitative methods. A class paper, reproducible analysis, research-assistant task or carefully described independent project can help you explain your preparation. Identify your own contribution: cleaning data is different from designing an identification strategy, and estimating a correlation is different from establishing causation.

Next action: Request current application instructions from the department. Confirm the amount, selection timetable and required materials; those details are not stated on the reviewed scholarship page.

4. Rivers Scholarship: merit-based support at Illinois

The University of Illinois’ Robert L. and Amelia Louise Rivers Scholarship is a monetary award for up to two undergraduate economics majors. The published criteria require a declared economics major, at least 60 hours of coursework, at least 18 hours of economics, a minimum 3.0 GPA in UIUC economics/statistics courses, and a minimum 3.0 overall GPA.Official source

The application includes a cover sheet, résumé or CV, and a 250–500-word essay addressing what distinguishes you as an economics student. The prompt asks why economics is compelling and what you have done beyond classes to further your studies.Official source

A strong response should connect a specific economic question to something you actually pursued. For example, explain the question behind a research project, your method, one limitation and what you learned. Do not claim a publication, policy impact or independent research role that you cannot substantiate.

Illinois says departmental applications are available each spring and complete applications must arrive by the relevant due date. Its general page also describes one-time monetary payments through student accounts. Neither the general page nor this award’s reviewed detail page establishes a specific next-cycle deadline or dollar amount.Official source

Next action: Check the live department scholarship instructions before preparing the submission. Use your transcript to check both GPA thresholds and both coursework thresholds separately.

5. Shebik Centennial Scholarship: financial need and educational goals

The Shebik Centennial Economics Scholarship supports declared Illinois economics students who have completed at least one full-time semester at UIUC. It is need-based, with preference for first-generation students and Illinois residents. Those preferences should not be rewritten as universal eligibility exclusions.Official source

The application requires a cover sheet, résumé or CV, and two essays of 100–500 words each. One explains how your interest in economics developed and how the major supports your education or career goals. The other explains how the scholarship would advance your education.Official source

Use the second essay to identify a concrete financial constraint and the educational opportunity support would make possible. You do not need to dramatize hardship or disclose more personal information than the application requests. Be accurate about your budget and distinguish existing aid from an award you have not yet received.

Next action: Verify current submission instructions, the award amount and the spring deadline with the economics department. The reviewed pages do not publish those next-cycle details.

How to build an economics scholarship shortlist

Filter by enrollment before writing essays

If you do not attend Oswego or Illinois, do not spend hours preparing applications for their enrolled-student departmental awards. Instead, search your own economics department, college-level scholarship office and financial aid portal. Ask whether economics minors qualify, whether transfer credits count toward departmental thresholds, and whether students apply directly or need a nomination.

Label the kind of support

Use separate rows for tuition scholarships, summer research or training support, assistantships and recognition awards. An “outstanding senior” honor is not automatically a cash scholarship. Likewise, a summer stipend should not be counted twice as both degree tuition assistance and living-cost support.

Keep a small evidence-based tracker

Record the provider URL, institution restriction, award year, amount, GPA measure, required credits, deadline, documents and last-checked date. Mark missing values as “not published” rather than filling them from a previous cycle. If you email a provider, save the reply and the date so your application uses current instructions.

Explain your economics work precisely

Build one adaptable evidence bank: a question you investigated, the course or project where it arose, the data or theory used, your own role, a limitation and your next learning goal. Adapt that material to each actual prompt. Do not submit a generic career essay to an award explicitly asking about study beyond the classroom.

Check the financial-aid effect

Before accepting an award, ask your financial aid office how it will be applied and whether it affects other aid. Also confirm payment timing, permitted expenses, enrollment conditions and any renewal rules. These vary; the existence of a scholarship name alone does not establish the terms.

Frequently asked questions

Can a first-year economics student apply to these opportunities?

Not every opportunity fits a first-year student. Oswego’s two listed scholarships specify sophomore or junior-year applications, Rivers has coursework thresholds, and Shebik requires at least one completed full-time UIUC semester. The AEA describes an ideal applicant as having completed at least two undergraduate years. Check the exact program rather than treating “undergraduate” as sufficient eligibility.Official sourceOfficial sourceOfficial sourceOfficial source

Are these full-ride economics scholarships?

The reviewed sources do not describe the four university awards as full rides or publish their dollar values. The AEA publishes a specific summer support package, not a full undergraduate or graduate degree scholarship. Do not describe either category as guaranteed full-degree funding.Official sourceOfficial sourceOfficial source

Can international students use this list?

The AEA states that scholarship assistance is available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. The reviewed university scholarship pages do not establish a general international-student eligibility policy. International students at those institutions should ask the relevant office rather than interpret an omitted citizenship rule as confirmed eligibility.Official source

What should I do first?

If the 2027 AEA program fits your goals, review its application and recommendation requirements now. If you are an enrolled economics major seeking degree support, start with your department’s live application process and confirm the current award year before drafting essays. A short list of genuinely eligible opportunities is more useful than a long list of names you cannot apply to.
