Cum laude is a Latin graduation distinction commonly rendered “with honor” or “with praise.” It is part of a hierarchy that also includes magna cum laude and summa cum laude. The qualifying rules belong to the institution; a familiar label does not establish one national GPA cutoff.

Identify what the school actually awards
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is this Latin honors or a different recognition? | Similar words can refer to different programs |
| Which GPA is used? | The relevant calculation may not be your displayed overall total |
| Which credits count? | Institutional rules may distinguish coursework |
| When is it final? | A projected result is not a confirmed designation |
| Where is it recorded? | Use the official transcript or diploma information |

Do not infer eligibility from one number
If your GPA appears to meet a published threshold, check every other applicable condition. Ask the registrar or adviser which catalog and calculation apply to your degree.
Do not assume a transferred course or repeated course is treated identically in every honors calculation. Obtain the actual policy rather than reverse-engineering it from another student’s result.
An original record example
Imagine a student whose commencement materials suggest an expected honor, but whose final coursework is not yet posted. The student should ask when the final designation is determined and what can accurately be reported in the meantime.
This hypothetical example does not establish that every school uses provisional ceremony honors.
Report the exact distinction
Once confirmed, use the institution’s actual wording on a résumé or application. Keep a departmental award separate if it is a different credential. Do not upgrade a confirmed cum laude designation to magna cum laude because a personal calculation suggests another threshold.
If a form asks for an expected distinction, make the provisional status explicit rather than presenting it as already awarded.
What it does not guarantee
This article does not claim that cum laude guarantees employment, graduate admission or a particular salary. Explain relevant academic work and experience on their own merits instead of expecting the label to carry every part of an application.
What to do next
Find the governing honors policy, confirm the calculation and wait for the official designation before reporting it as earned. Ask about unclear record treatment early enough to resolve an error through the proper process.
