Computer science scholarships can come with very different commitments. A department may recognize academic merit at one university, while a national service-linked program may fund tuition in exchange for future work. Compare the obligation as carefully as the award.
Verified computer science funding routes
| Program | Funding/scope | Who should investigate | Deadline/status |
|---|---|---|---|
| SMART Scholarship-for-Service | Full tuition and associated support under a service agreement; broader STEM, not CS-only | Eligible bachelor’s/master’s/doctoral or incoming undergraduate student in an approved discipline, including computer science/engineering | Program administrator lists December 4, 2026, 5 p.m. ET; current application open |
| Illinois Computer Science Visionary Scholarships | Renewable institutional scholarships; amount not stated on reviewed page | High-achieving Illinois Siebel School undergraduates | Current application timing/selection process: confirm with the school |
| Jeffrey P. Blahut Memorial Scholarship | Institutional academic-merit scholarship; amount not stated | Illinois CS majors entering junior or senior year | Current date/application instructions: confirm with the school |
The Illinois awards are not portable national scholarships. The SMART program is not unrestricted money without an employment obligation. None of these rows means that a coding competition prize or internship wage should be called a tuition scholarship.
SMART: screen the commitment first
The current eligibility page lists citizenship of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand or United Kingdom; age 18 or older by January 1, 2028; a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0; and intended/current fall 2027 study at a regionally accredited U.S. institution. It requests one to five years of degree funding beginning in August 2027 and the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Computer Science and Engineering, Data Science and Analytics, Information Sciences and Software Engineering appear among the approved disciplines. Do not infer that every technology-adjacent management degree qualifies. Ask which discipline covers a combined program before applying.
SMART requires a one-for-one postgraduation civilian service commitment. Read the actual agreement, facility-placement process, internship obligations and consequences of not completing the commitment. The eligibility page uses differing internship-duration wording in its summary and FAQ; obtain written clarification for your proposed award length rather than relying on one sentence. This guide does not resolve that contract question.
A scholarship tied to future civilian work may suit a student who wants that pathway. A student needing flexibility to pursue unrelated employment should not ignore the obligation simply because tuition is covered.
Illinois: ask about your exact major and selection route
The Visionary description concerns high-achieving Siebel School undergraduates and renewable scholarships. It does not publish a single universal award amount or a current deadline on the reviewed page. Ask the school how students are considered and what continuation terms apply.
Blahut is more specific: CS majors entering junior or senior year, selected on academic merit. A freshman applicant should not treat it as an entering-student award. A combined-degree student should obtain confirmation rather than assume the label CS automatically settles eligibility.
Use the school’s undergraduate award directory to find the correct current application guidance. Award pages and recipient announcements establish different facts: a past winner does not prove that a current application is open.
Prepare project evidence without overstating ownership
A scholarship may ask for activities or technical experience; that does not establish a universal repository requirement. When you share a project, state the problem, your contribution, testing and limitations.
A hypothetical description could read:
I built the input-validation component of a class scheduling prototype. Two classmates implemented the interface and storage. I tested invalid dates and duplicate entries; we did not deploy the project to real users.
That is stronger than claiming you launched a platform with thousands of users when you only built a classroom prototype. Replace every detail with your actual work, and distinguish libraries, templates and collaborators from code you wrote.
Before sharing a repository, remove tokens, personal data, private datasets and employer material. Test access outside your account and follow licensing or course restrictions. Scholarship review is not permission to disclose a company’s systems.
Build a funding comparison with obligations visible
Use columns for tuition support, living allowances, payment recipient, duration, renewal, summer requirements and postgraduation work. For an institutional award, add the eligible school/major. For service-linked support, add the agreement and clarification status.
Do not add an unannounced departmental amount to the budget or use the retail value of software as spendable cash. Ask your aid office how outside support affects the rest of the package.
Frequently asked questions
Must I already be in college for SMART? The current rules explicitly include high-school seniors/incoming freshmen who will pursue the approved fall 2027 pathway; enrollment must be in place by the program’s August 1, 2027 start.
Are all CS-related degrees eligible for every program? No. Departmental and approved-discipline definitions differ.
What should I do next? Screen SMART’s mandatory conditions and service contract, or ask Illinois about your exact degree/stage. Prepare truthful academic and project evidence only for programs matching that profile.
