Chemistry students should check both the current program name and the current application cycle before using a scholarship list. An old award description may not match the provider’s present offering. The American Chemical Society now describes its undergraduate program as the ACS Catalyst Scholarship, and its 2026–27 application period has concluded. Read the current ACS undergraduate scholarship page.

Other funding routes depend on prior program participation or a research-career goal. Compare those conditions before deciding which application deserves your time.

Read the current ACS criteria—not an old directory entry

The ACS undergraduate page includes chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, chemical technology, and other chemistry-based sciences. It specifies U.S. citizenship or permanent residence and full-time enrollment. Its application materials include a Student Aid Report, and the page describes payment to accredited institutions for educational expenses. Current ACS program details.

Those details describe the published 2026–27 program, not a guaranteed future cycle. Do not copy its past selection or acceptance dates into a new calendar. Ask ACS when new guidelines are available and whether anything has changed before preparing documents.

A prior program name on a third-party website is a reason to return to the provider, not a reason to assume the old conditions remain in force.

Project SEED participation changes the funding route

The college scholarship is not a general award for anyone interested in chemistry: ACS identifies past summer-program participation as part of its audience. The provider separately describes the summer fellowship as an 8–10-week research experience. ACS scholarship and fellowship overview.

The summer program’s published 2026 student application closed April 6, 2026. That date is in the past and is not the college scholarship deadline. Keep the two applications separate. ACS summer application page.

If you previously participated, ask the Project SEED office which current college-scholarship process applies. If you did not, do not list that scholarship as immediately available to you.

Prepare a chemistry-specific account of your work

Choose a real question, experiment, course project, or technical responsibility. Explain the aim, your role, the evidence you examined, and what you learned. Do not turn a routine assigned task into a claim that you independently led a research program.

A hypothetical applicant might discuss how comparing repeated measurements changed their interpretation of a result. Another might explain why a proposed method was unsuitable and what evidence prompted a revision. The strongest example is one you can describe accurately—not the one with the most impressive terminology.

Ask a supervisor before sharing unpublished findings or confidential information. Preserve your notes and identify collaborators’ contributions fairly.

Match funding purpose to your next expense

For each award, record eligible study, payment recipient, covered terms, renewal conditions, and any separate nomination. Do not count a pending application as confirmed tuition funding.

If you are entering a related field, use the provider’s list rather than assuming every STEM major qualifies. If your plans change after selection, ask how that affects the award before relying on continued support.

Common questions

Is the ACS undergraduate award open now? Its current page says the 2026–27 application period has concluded. Do not infer the next opening date. ACS status.

Can anyone apply for the Project SEED college scholarship? ACS identifies past summer-program participants as the relevant audience. ACS overview.

What should I do first? Identify which route actually fits you, verify the current program rules, and ask your chemistry department about its separate awards and nomination calendar.
