In short

“Business major” is a starting point, not a complete eligibility category. Some awards require accounting coursework and a CPA goal; others fund government-finance careers or recognize women already demonstrating business leadership. Separate those categories before drafting an application.

Accounting students: choose the correct CPA pathway

The Future CPAs scholarship is not a general marketing, management, or economics award. Its current criteria include accounting study, CPA intent, a 3.0 overall and major GPA, financial need, and AICPA student-affiliate membership or an application for membership. The page announces a 2027–28 application window while retaining earlier academic-year credit and enrollment conditions. Read the new application before treating those older dates as next-cycle rules.

The transfer scholarship addresses a different transition: moving from a two-year college to a four-year accounting or sponsor-approved related program. It specifies CPA intent and recognition of the degree pathway by the relevant accountancy board. A business-administration transfer student should not assume “accounting-related” automatically includes their concentration.

AICPA says one Legacy application can evaluate applicants for multiple eligible Legacy awards. Avoid writing duplicate applications before checking the actual portal.

Public finance students: show why government work fits

GFOA’s common conditions include U.S. or Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, intent to work in state/provincial or local government finance, and no previous GFOA scholarship award. Each named scholarship adds its own conditions.

An illustrative application angle: explain a municipal-budget class project, the question you investigated, and why public-sector budgeting interests you. Do not merely write that you want a high-paying finance job. First identify the specific GFOA award whose degree-level and enrollment rules match you; the overview’s maximum amount is not the amount every student receives.

Women in business: distinguish a leadership award from a discontinued scholarship

Zonta states that the Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarship ended in 2024. Its replacement is a leadership award, with age and evidence requirements covering entrepreneurship, ethical conduct, and contributions related to women and girls or climate justice. It is not simply an automatic scholarship for any woman enrolled in business.

Find the relevant Zonta club for the submission deadline and address. Applicants in areas without clubs may have a district or e-club route. Do not copy a deadline from another city’s club.

Make a concentration-specific shortlist

Use this proposed three-column worksheet:

  • Required fit: degree, concentration, academic stage, citizenship/residency, and nomination or membership conditions.
  • Evidence available: transcript, transfer plan, CPA goal, public-finance experience, or leadership results.
  • Missing confirmation: current form, cycle, payment destination, renewal, or local deadline.

Example: a community-college accounting student transferring next fall can investigate the AICPA transfer route. A marketing student should instead ask their business school about marketing-specific and general endowed awards; the accounting rows do not become eligible because both majors share a college of business.

What should MBA applicants do?

None of the undergraduate pathways above should be assumed to cover an MBA. Ask each MBA program whether merit consideration is automatic, requires a separate application, or uses earlier scholarship rounds. Compare the written award’s duration and conditions with the degree’s total cost before accepting it.

Your next move is to select one concentration-matched provider, check its next dated application, and obtain the exact requirements before spending time on the essay.
