In short

Speaking two languages does not automatically qualify you for every language scholarship. Some programs support future teachers, some fund additional study and others require a specific language or assessed proficiency.

ACTFL’s readable Future Teacher page describes funding for students committed to language teaching, including a graduate-certification route added in 2026. It is not a general award for anyone who is bilingual. Official program

Identify the proficiency evidence

ACTFL’s instructions distinguish transcript evidence from certain language-assessment documentation and request a language-teacher recommendation. Read the current form before paying for a test or requesting an unrelated reference.

Do not assume home-language use, a school course and a formal proficiency result are interchangeable under every provider’s rules.

Explain the actual use of language

For a hypothetical example, a student interested in language teaching can describe the experiences informing that plan. Another student using two languages in family or community life may need a different award unless the career condition also fits.

The example does not rank languages or require a particular identity narrative.

Keep study abroad separate

A language award may support a specific location or activity rather than general tuition. Identify the permitted program, dates and expenses before putting it in the college budget.

Do not treat a professional-association listing of an external program as evidence that all its terms have been independently checked.

Prepare recommendations precisely

Give the recommender the actual question and submission method. A generic statement that you are bilingual may not answer a prompt about future teaching. Ask whether the person can provide a relevant, accurate reference.

Next action

Choose whether your search concerns proficiency, teaching or language study, then verify the complete current rules for one matching program. Keep broad academic scholarships separate from bilingual-specific opportunities.
