Institutional eligibility is often decisive. A department may offer a well-documented award, but it is not a portable scholarship for students at any university. Similarly, a small reimbursement for archive-related expenses is useful research support without being tuition aid.
This guide uses official departmental examples to show what to look for, which conditions to compare, and where current application details still require confirmation. It does not present advanced scholar awards or expired calls as open scholarships for every American studies major.
American studies funding examples at a glance
Checked October 17, 2026. The Fullerton awards below are for eligible California State University, Fullerton students. The Kansas funding is departmental support at the University of Kansas. None should be treated as a national award available independently of institutional enrollment.

These figures are published program amounts, not guaranteed awards or proof of an open portal. The sections below explain the eligibility and documentation that determine whether a route belongs on your shortlist.
Start with your degree and funding purpose
Write down your actual major or minor, institution, degree level, completed coursework, GPA, and intended expense before searching. A scholarship for American studies majors may not accept a history student with a similar research interest. Another program may explicitly include minors.
Next, identify the purpose:
- Undergraduate educational support: help tied to enrollment, achievement, need, or a departmental major.
- Graduate career preparation: support linked to a master’s program and an intended professional direction.
- Study abroad or study away: funding for an approved academic experience, not an unrelated personal trip.
- Research or conference support: often restricted reimbursement rather than tuition funding.
- Recognition prizes: sometimes selected by faculty without an application and potentially awarded for completed work.
This classification helps you avoid spending time on opportunities that cannot pay the cost you need covered.
Undergraduate American studies scholarships: a Fullerton example
The David Jon Vaca Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship is a $1,000 American Studies award based on scholastic achievement and financial need.
The published eligibility requires an American Studies major with:
- At least 60 units earned overall.
- At least nine units in American Studies courses.
- A GPA of at least 3.5 in American Studies courses.
The GPA is specifically described as an AMST-course GPA. Do not substitute an overall GPA without checking how the department verifies the requirement. A student with strong grades but insufficient AMST coursework should not assume the coursework threshold will be waived.
The page directs applicants to the CSUF Scholarship Application section of the Student Portal. It asks for statements explaining financial need and the place of American Studies in the student’s academic career.
For the academic statement, connect a real course, analytical question, or completed project to your educational goals. For example, you might explain how studying culture, migration, media, regional identity, or institutions changed the questions you want to investigate. These are possible topics, not required concentrations or reasons to invent research experience.
For the need statement, use accurate financial circumstances and explain the specific educational gap the scholarship could help address. Avoid assuming that a merit-and-need award requires the same financial form as every other scholarship.
Resolve the deadline conflict before submitting
The department’s scholarship overview lists September 4 for fall and March 1 for spring. The individual Vaca page lists October 15 for fall and March 1 for spring, while also describing the scholarship as awarded once a year and displaying recipients from multiple terms.
Those inconsistencies do not justify choosing whichever date is later or declaring applications open. Ask the department which current cycle is accepting applications and use the active Student Portal record. As of the October 17 research check, both displayed fall month/day dates were already past; neither establishes a new upcoming deadline.
The individual page says previous applicants may reapply. That is not the same as a verified automatic renewal or permission for every previous recipient to receive it again. Confirm the current award terms for your situation.
Graduate funding for an education career
The American Studies Graduate Scholarship for Careers in Education offers $1,000 to a CSUF American Studies graduate student pursuing an education-related career. The provider describes teaching at any level, academic advising or counseling, and educational administration as examples.
Published requirements include:
- Twelve units completed or in progress in the AMST MA program.
- A GPA of at least 3.0.
- Plans to pursue a career in education, counseling, or educational administration.
- No prior receipt of this scholarship; previous recipients cannot reapply.
The application goes through the CSUF Student Portal. The career-plans essay has a maximum of 500 words and asks how the applicant intends to improve students’ educational futures and how an American Studies master’s degree would help.
A focused response should connect the degree to a plausible contribution. Identify the educational problem or opportunity you care about, the learning your program provides, and the next step you are preparing to take. If you are not yet employed in education, distinguish a future goal from an established professional role.
The scholarship page says it is a fall award and refers to the fall scholarship application deadline without a year-specific date. Confirm the live call rather than copying the general overview’s deadline into a future year.
This example also illustrates why a career-linked award is not automatically open to every graduate student in a humanities field. The institution, degree, coursework, GPA, career purpose, and prior-recipient rule all matter.
Study abroad and study away: the Steiner scholarship
The Michael & Lucy Steiner Study Abroad Scholarship provides $1,000 to help offset qualifying CSUF study abroad, study away, or other CSUF travel and scholarship programs.
Unlike the Vaca award, the published scope includes an American Studies major, minor, or graduate student at CSUF. The student needs at least nine units in American Studies and acceptance into a CSUF travel and study program.
The application requires a statement of approximately 500 words describing financial need, reasons for studying abroad, and the role of American Studies in the experience. Selection considers need, scholarship, and the quality of the purpose statement.
Do not write only about wanting to visit a destination. Explain what the approved program will let you study and why its academic context matters. If the project involves a particular location, institution, or course, verify that the program actually includes it before describing it as confirmed.
The page lists a March 1 deadline at 5 p.m. but does not establish the next cycle’s year or time zone. It directs applicants to the CSUF Student Portal and says multiple awards may be available depending on funding. Do not infer that every eligible applicant will receive $1,000 or that the amount is automatically renewable.
There is also a post-experience expectation. Recipients should visit an American Studies class to report on the experience, write a thank-you note for the scholarship webpage, or otherwise help encourage participation. Read the current award agreement to learn which activity is expected of you.
The page says the scholarship offsets program costs, but the reviewed material does not establish the complete payment method or every permitted expense. Confirm whether the award reaches your student account, the program, or another payee and whether it arrives before a non-refundable deposit is due.
