ADHD Scholarships: Check the Learning-Disability Requirement First

In short

A scholarship listed under “ADHD scholarships” does not necessarily accept applicants with ADHD alone. The National Center for Learning Disabilities' Anne Ford and Allegra Ford Thomas scholarships require a documented learning disability; the provider specifically welcomes students who have ADHD and a learning disability. That distinction should come before an application essay. Anne Ford · Allegra Ford Thomas

These two official programs are useful leads, but the provider pages still display a May 10, 2026 cutoff. That date is in the past as of October 14, 2026. The pages also contain older timing language, so this article does not describe either program as currently open. NCLD scholarship page

Start with eligibility, not a diagnosis assumption

Use the provider’s eligibility wording rather than assuming that a broad label such as “disability scholarship” answers the question. For these NCLD programs, a learning disability is required; having another disability does not remove that condition. NCLD eligibility FAQ

If your records do not clearly answer the scholarship’s question, ask the provider what documentation it accepts. This article does not diagnose a learning disability or suggest obtaining a diagnosis merely to pursue an award.

If ADHD is your only documented condition, do not invest time in these two applications without resolving eligibility. Build a separate search around your school, intended field, location, community involvement and other interests instead.

Match the program to your actual education plan

Before choosing between these two programs, write down the type of program you currently intend to enter. NCLD distinguishes the bachelor’s pathway from the community-college, vocational/technical and specialized-program pathway. Its FAQ asks students applying to both types to answer based on current plans and contact the organization if those plans change. NCLD pathway guidance

Avoid submitting contradictory plans merely to make two applications appear eligible. Ask how to proceed if you have not yet decided or if your choice changes.

Check the application date before uploading records

A page can contain an application button and still show an elapsed deadline. An undated “open” message should not override a dated cutoff that has already passed.

For this research check, the NCLD pages contain multiple timing references, including the May 2026 overview and older FAQ language. Treat the next application cycle as unconfirmed until the provider or current application portal resolves the inconsistency. NCLD timing information

A useful question is: “Your scholarship page shows more than one timeline. Which application cycle is currently accepting submissions, and what is its final deadline?”

Organize the application in small, visible steps

Once the cycle and eligibility are confirmed, create a checklist from the actual form rather than a generic scholarship template. Use separate tasks for eligibility, documents, recommendations, responses and final review.

For each task, note the next physical action. “Finish scholarship” is vague; “ask my counselor which existing document answers the eligibility question” is actionable. “Write essay” can become “copy the exact prompt into a draft and outline one example.”

This is an optional workflow, not a treatment strategy or a claim that it works for every student with ADHD. Choose a format that fits how you already organize schoolwork.

Share only the documentation the provider requests

NCLD’s published FAQ requires proof of learning disability and describes acceptable documentation and file-format instructions. Confirm those instructions in the current application before uploading. NCLD documentation FAQ

Do not assume a scholarship directory, matching profile, or informal email recipient needs your complete medical or educational record. Ask what is necessary and use the provider’s designated submission method.

Common questions

Does ADHD automatically qualify me for these awards?

No. For the two NCLD programs above, a documented LD is required. NCLD eligibility

Is this a complete list of ADHD scholarships?

No. It is a tightly screened starting point, not a claim that only two relevant awards exist. Other leads should not be added until their providers’ actual rules are checked.

Can I apply for scholarships that do not mention ADHD?

Search beyond diagnosis labels and evaluate the stated eligibility of each program. Do not treat a general academic or local award as ADHD-specific in your shortlist.

What should I do today?

Confirm whether the next NCLD cycle is available, identify the appropriate education pathway, and ask the provider any unresolved documentation question before preparing an application.
