In short

The PSAT 10 is a spring assessment for 10th graders in College Board's SAT Suite. It can help identify skills to work on before later testing, but it does not qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program. A high PSAT 10 score cannot substitute for the required PSAT/NMSQT result.

The PSAT 10 is a spring assessment for 10th graders in College Board’s SAT Suite. It can help identify skills to work on before later testing, but it does not qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program. A high PSAT 10 score cannot substitute for the required PSAT/NMSQT result.

College Board’s comparison explicitly distinguishes the tests. The similar names and formats do not make their scholarship uses identical.

PSAT 10 vs. other tests

AssessmentMain planning distinction
PSAT 8/9Baseline assessment geared to eighth and ninth graders; not a National Merit qualifying test
PSAT 10Spring 10th-grade assessment; not a National Merit qualifying test
PSAT/NMSQTFall test used for National Merit entry, subject to the program’s year and eligibility rules
SATSeparate college-admissions assessment; acceptance and reporting rules depend on the college

The official comparison says PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT are identical assessments but administered for different purposes and times. Do not infer that a PSAT 10 score can be relabeled as a PSAT/NMSQT score.

What is on the PSAT 10?

College Board’s content guide identifies Reading and Writing and Math sections. Under standard conditions, the test takes two hours and fourteen minutes, plus the break; accommodations guidance describes adjustments for approved students.

The official student guide explains the modular digital test:

SectionStandard timeStructure

Use the current guide and the school’s testing instructions for your administration. Approved accommodations may change timing or delivery; a generic online timetable is not your individual approval.

When is the next PSAT 10?

Checked October 13, 2026, College Board’s schedule lists the Spring 2027 school-day window as March 1–April 30, 2027. Your school selects its date within the applicable window. That range is not a weekend registration calendar.

Ask your counselor about the school date, registration process, cost if any, device arrangements, and any state-specific rules. Homeschooled or away-from-school students should use the official host-school guidance and confirm availability directly with a participating school.

What do the scores mean?

The SAT Suite score explanation gives PSAT 10 a total score range of 320–1520, compared with 400–1600 for the SAT. Do not convert a PSAT 10 total into a promised SAT score by adding points.

A score is most useful when paired with the skills breakdown. Percentiles compare you with a reference group; they are not a scholarship award percentage or a forecast of college admission. Use College Board’s score information to identify which comparison population your percentile uses.

Turn the report into a practical study plan

This is a suggested method, not an official score-improvement guarantee:

  1. Pick one Reading and Writing skill and one Math skill needing attention.
  2. Use official practice questions or a Bluebook practice assessment appropriate to your preparation.
  3. Keep an error log separating misunderstanding, setup, and timing mistakes.
  4. Explain corrected answers in your own words.
  5. Revisit the same skill with different questions before another full practice test.

Illustrative example: a student repeatedly misreads percentage-change questions. Their next session should practice identifying the original quantity and writing the relationship, not merely retake an entire test. A student missing punctuation questions can review the specific sentence-boundary rule and apply it to new examples.

College Board’s parent resource also describes skills progress and AP Potential. Treat course suggestions as a conversation with your counselor about readiness and interests, not a mandatory placement decision.

Plan accommodations early

College Board recommends contacting the school counselor or SSD coordinator at least seven weeks before testing. Statewide testing programs can have their own submission timelines; check the current accommodations dates.

Do not assume an existing school plan automatically approves every testing accommodation. Ask who submits the request and how you will confirm approval.

The next step toward scholarships

If National Merit is a goal, ask your counselor which PSAT/NMSQT administration corresponds to your graduation timeline and review the NMSC requirements. Do not rely on a predicted cutoff or an older student’s schedule, especially if your high school timeline is nonstandard.

Your next action is to confirm the actual school testing date and choose two skills to practice. Use PSAT 10 for preparation; use the correct qualifying test for the scholarship competition.
