The federal deadline to submit the 2027–28 FAFSA is June 30, 2028. Your state and college may have much earlier deadlines, so the federal date is not a safe date to wait for. The U.S. Department of Education states both points in its official FAFSA process guidance.
As of October 13, 2026, the 2027–28 FAFSA is available. Federal Student Aid identifies that form as the application for attendance between July 1, 2027, and June 30, 2028. Current federal application announcement.
Choose the correct award year first
| Attendance period | FAFSA form | Federal submission deadline |
|---|---|---|
| July 1, 2026–June 30, 2027 | 2026–27 | June 30, 2027 |
| July 1, 2027–June 30, 2028 | 2027–28 | June 30, 2028 |
The earlier row is supported by the official 2026–27 form; the later row by the federal process guide.
If you are starting college in fall 2027, do not select a form merely because “2026” is the current calendar year. Select the year that covers your intended attendance. If attending a summer term near the boundary, ask your financial-aid office which form or forms it needs for that term.
Three deadline types can affect one application
Federal Student Aid distinguishes college, state and federal deadlines. College priority dates can affect access to limited funds; state aid has its own rules; the federal cutoff is separate. A state may also require another application. Official three-deadline explanation.
| Deadline | Where to verify it | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| College | Financial-aid website for each school | Award year, priority date, additional forms, document deadline |
| State | Federal state-deadline lookup, then the relevant state agency | Program, required submission, exact date and any additional application |
| Federal | Current FAFSA instructions | Correct award year and final submission cutoff |
Do not use a state deadline from an old article or assume all colleges in a state share one priority date. Record the exact date on the page for the applicable award year, with the source and the day you checked it.
Build a timeline that works before the earliest date
Here is an original hypothetical example—not an actual school’s policy:
Jordan plans to enroll in fall 2027. College A lists a January 15, 2027 priority date; College B lists February 1, 2027; Jordan’s intended state grant lists March 1, 2027. The practical filing target is before January 15, not June 30, 2028.
Jordan makes four tasks:
- Confirm that every page refers to 2027–28.
- Complete the required applicant and contributor steps early enough to resolve problems.
- Check the submitted form’s status rather than assuming a saved draft was filed.
- Track College A’s separate document request and the state grant’s additional application, if required.
Put reminders before each deadline, leaving room to address missing information. This is planning advice, not a promise about processing time.
Submitting is not the last step
The FAFSA is an application, not your final financial-aid offer. The Department of Education explains that students receive a FAFSA Submission Summary and may need corrections; schools use the information in their aid process. Official process overview.
After filing, check which schools are listed, review required follow-up, and respond to your school’s instructions. Keep the submission confirmation. If the college needs additional records, ask whether they have a deadline independent of FAFSA submission.
What happens if you missed a date?
First identify which date you missed. Federal Student Aid advises students who missed a college priority date to ask about remaining options; missing a state date does not automatically close federal aid eligibility before its own deadline. Official missed-deadline guidance.
Contact the financial-aid office with a precise question: “For the 2027–28 year, I missed (your named program or priority deadline). Is my application still accepted, what funding can still be considered, and what should I complete next?”
Do not interpret “still accepted” as a guarantee of the same funds you might have received earlier. If you missed the federal cutoff itself, contact the school about other possibilities rather than assuming a state or college can extend the federal deadline for you.
FAQ
Is June 30, 2027 the deadline for students starting in fall 2027? That date is the federal deadline for the 2026–27 form. The 2027–28 federal deadline is June 30, 2028; earlier school and state dates still matter.
Do I need to submit by every college’s date? Build your timeline around the earliest applicable requirement and complete any school-specific forms separately.
Should I wait for an admission decision? Do not let that assumption cause you to miss a published aid deadline. Check the school’s instructions for applicants who have not yet been admitted.
