In short

Before choosing a job for its college benefit, verify that the benefit covers your intended program and applies to the role you would actually hold. “Tuition reimbursement” is often used loosely: some employers pay eligible costs upfront, while other study may receive only partial assistance. These four official programs were checked October 13, 2026.

Compare the programs

Employer and official programPublished benefitEligibility timingImportant limit to check
Walmart/Sam’s Club — Live Better ULittle or no out-of-pocket tuition and required-book cost in eligible programsDay one for eligible associatesApproved catalog only; existing bachelor’s holders excluded
Target — Dream to BeTuition-free or partially funded educationU.S. full- and part-time team members from day oneFunding differs by selected program; do not assume every degree is fully covered
Starbucks — College Achievement Plan100% upfront tuition coverage for a first bachelor’s through ASU OnlineBenefits eligibility requiredSpecific institution, degree route and benefits conditions
Amazon — Career ChoiceEligible tuition paid upfrontHourly FAQ states eligibility after 90 days; verify your roleApproved route and employee category matter; corporate access expanded in 2026

These are programs, not promises that a particular job is available, that you will be hired or that every expense will be paid.

Walmart: catalog and prior-degree restrictions matter

The current Live Better U page includes eligible hourly and salaried full- and part-time associates. Its FAQ excludes temporary associates and salaried associates at market level and above, and says associates who already have a bachelor’s degree are ineligible. Federal or state grants apply first, with LBU covering the rest of eligible tuition and required books. The company says there is no obligation to remain after completion. Walmart’s current rules.

Ask an LBU advisor to identify your exact approved program. Do not assume an outside college or a discounted graduate degree is part of the funded catalog.

Target: tuition-free and partially funded are different offers

Target’s September 29, 2025 fact sheet states that U.S. full- and part-time team members can access Dream to Be from their first day. Its range includes undergraduate and master’s degrees, certificates and foundational learning, but coverage can be full or partial. Dream to Be fact sheet.

For the degree you want, ask for the current covered amount, approved school, payment process and any employee-category exceptions. This article deliberately does not copy dollar caps from a 2021 launch announcement into a current benefit promise.

Starbucks: the first bachelor’s route is specific

Starbucks’ current explanation covers benefits-eligible full- and part-time employees pursuing a first bachelor’s through ASU Online. The ASU program site explains its enrollment route and directs applicants to the benefits and admission requirements. Starbucks current overview and ASU SCAP.

Check the particular degree, admission route and benefit eligibility before changing employment. “Part-time employees can qualify” does not mean every new part-time employee immediately satisfies every benefits condition.

Amazon: use the current role-specific policy

Amazon’s September 2026 announcement says Career Choice expanded to corporate employees in January 2026 and continues upfront payment. Its hourly-employee FAQ describes a 90-day waiting period and continued participation while eligible. Those descriptions should not be turned into a universal rule for every role in every country. Ask whether your proposed role qualifies, which school route is available and whether any annual cap applies to your employee category. No unverified personal cap is supplied here.

Compare work and school together

A hypothetical worker who already has a bachelor’s should not pick Walmart based solely on an LBU headline. A student seeking a particular in-person college should not assume SCAP pays for it. A worker who cannot front tuition should ask explicitly whether the selected benefit is direct payment or later reimbursement.

Before accepting a job, request the written current education-benefit policy and a program-specific cost breakdown. Compare the job’s actual schedule, commute and pay alongside the benefit. A tuition headline is useful only if the job and covered degree fit your real plan.
