In short

Ask which event or academic milestone you mean. Completing degree requirements, receiving the degree and attending commencement need not be the same date.

Harvard lists its next University Commencement as Thursday, May 27, 2027. Its schedule page says detailed next-season programming will be posted later, while many visible event times still describe the prior season. Official schedule

Harvard GSAS, for example, permits degree recipients from November 2026, February 2027 and May 2027 to participate in its May 2027 commencement activities. That is an institutional example, not a universal rule. GSAS guidance

Do not book from an old schedule

Check the year attached to every event. A page can show a future commencement date while retaining a detailed timetable from the previous season.

Confirm the event relevant to your degree before assuming a university-wide ceremony includes the stage crossing or diploma presentation you want to attend.

An original guest-planning example

Imagine a student whose university ceremony and department celebration occur at different times. A guest who books only for the large ceremony may miss the smaller event the student most wants to share.

The example is hypothetical. Ask the actual school about tickets, accessibility, weather plans and when final details will be available.

Verify academic eligibility separately

Check the graduation application, outstanding coursework and record requirements through the official process. Ceremony registration should not be treated as proof that every degree requirement is complete.

If you need documentation for employment or further study, ask which official document confirms completion and when it can be issued.

Keep announcements accurate

Use the verified date and describe the event correctly. Avoid presenting an expected degree as already awarded before the institution’s decision is final.

For travel, review change terms while event details remain incomplete rather than treating an approximate schedule as guaranteed.

What to do next

Confirm the degree milestone, ceremony eligibility and exact event you plan to attend. Save the current-year official pages and revisit them before finalizing guest arrangements.
