Do not choose a chemical-engineering program merely because you enjoyed chemistry. Examine the engineering work: process analysis, transport, control and design. Berkeley’s published BS sequence includes those topics, while its degree overview separately lists chemistry and chemical biology. Berkeley major · Degree distinctions

Read a sample sequence as a dependency map
Berkeley’s published plan includes mathematics, science, process analysis, thermodynamics, transport and later design. Use the actual sequence to ask what preparation is expected and which courses depend on earlier work. Official sequence
Do not infer that a sample plan guarantees every course will fit your transfer record or preferred schedule.
Follow one technical interest
Choose an application you want to explore, then locate the core courses and approved electives supporting it. A research headline about energy or biotechnology is less useful than knowing how an undergraduate reaches the relevant training.
Ask which opportunities are required, optional or application-based. Do not assume a laboratory on the department website guarantees a student position.
An original fit example
Imagine one student interested in molecular laboratory investigation and another interested in scaling a production process. They should compare chemistry and chemical-engineering requirements rather than choosing between them by name alone.
The example does not set a career boundary or predict a job. It makes the course comparison more concrete.
Check access and affordability
Ask whether admission is to the institution or the exact major, how changes work and how prior credit applies. Request current costs and written aid terms. Do not turn an industry list into a salary or employment guarantee.
For a joint degree, ask about added requirements before assuming it is simply an extra label on the same coursework.
What to do next
Compare two current degree maps, identify the engineering tasks you want to learn and verify the route into the program. Add schools when their actual curriculum answers those questions—not to fill a top-ten quota.
